[history]
WEDNESDAY'S recall debate broke little new ground as meek journalists and inexperienced citizens lobbed softballs at Gov. Gray Davis and the candidates, failed to ask the toughest questions and let false statements go unchallenged. Why was Cruz Bustamante silent during the gross overspending of the Davis years? Why did Davis ignore former chief economist Ted Gibson that the state's revenue had dried up? Is Arianna Huffington, the anti-tax loophole candidate who uses tax loopholes, merely gathering anecdotes for a book?

Two reforms are needed in the recall process:
-- a runoff election
-- if a governor is recalled, all his official acts from the day the petitions were approved for circulation are nullified

I think it was last year that the head of the Republican Party in California, Shawn Steel, went ballistic about business donations. He complained very loudly that businesses weren't contributing to Republicans and that a little more support from business would have given the Republicans a couple more seats.
Bottom line, businesses support the Democrats, who then pass punitive legislation that runs them out of California.

As usual with these kind of bills, I see lawsuits and I see California tax payers paying the court costs.

Re: "Bottom line, businesses support the Democrats, who then pass punitive lesgislation that runs them out of California."
Business wants a voice in government, period. It matters not if they are Democrats, Republicans, Greens, or goons. Whoever is in power (or who business folks think will get power) gets the campaign/lobbyist dough.
As we have already seen, the California business community has not all that much power. Citizens by themselves certainly don't have any power in Sacramento. That's why the recall is now being held - too many people are disenfranchised with the government that is supposed to serve them! And frustrated as hades to boot!!!
Thank you Hiram Johnson, and Ted Costa! Let the recall work for the good of California's future. . .

First, (although the media rarely explain) California's nutty rules allow the workers to claim if they are injured. Many doctors who make their living off workers' comp are happy to oblige with or without proof. This is so true. My father (a physician) was involved in evaluating worker's compensation claims. He was absolutely appalled at the corruption and fraud in what is now an industry. The complicity of the medical profession (i.e., other doctors) drove him to the edge and he had to quit doing it.
California is going down the tubes. I say let Davis stay in and go down with the sinking ship. Why the GOP wants to put someone at the helm of the titanic is unclear to me. My only fallback on the recall is that perhaps it will send a message to the politicians in Sacramento that the people are fed up. Unfortunately, I rather doubt it.
