Court Date Set for 182mph Driver

LEHIGHTON, PA-September 4, 2003 — Just how fast will a Lamborghini go?

Police in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, charge William Faenza Junior was doing 182 in his Lamborghini Diablo.

Officers also charge Faenza was driving drunk. Police say they caught up with him when he pulled into a gas station.

While Faenza concedes he may have been doing 100, he denies going nearly 200 miles per hour.

He says if he was going that fast, the police would have never caught him.

Besides, Faenza says the wheels on his Lamborghini start to shake when he goes faster than 70.

He's to appear in court next Wednesday.

This past June I did 127 mph in a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta. Just outside of Toronto, CA on their QEW going North from Buffalo.

Spedometer on the Jetta says 140 but have never redlined it. Not bad for a 4 cyl Kraut efficiency car.

That's Sunbeam Tiger. An English company, Rootes, made a cute little roadster called an Alpine, which came with a clunky 4 banger in 1965-67. One of the first Carroll Shelby projects was to transplant a Ford 260 (later 289) Mustang motor into this 1600 pound car. The results were fantastic, but short lived. Rootes was part of Chrysler at the time (they also made Simca autos in France) and Shelby struck a better deal with Ford and AC cars of England, which was independent. Tigers were only made for a few years and are a poor man's Cobra.

In those late 80s Mustang engines it was pretty easy to get around the emissions equipment.

I was in my friends 1965 Porsche going up a steep mountain outside of Las Vegas toward LA doin about 90 MPH, when a Lamborghini Mura pulled up next to us. The guy waved, changed gears, burned rubber at 90 MPH and was gone out of sight within a few seconds (that was in 1966).

They of course point out that, while your 400 HP tuned Civic with kevlar hood and coffee can muffler might be able to out run most of these vehicles, nobody can outrun the radio.

135 in a 1990 Plymouth Laser, I pulled away from the Toyota MR2 at around 120. Not sure if he gave up or didn't have anything left.

The fastest I've driven is around 140 in one of these (mine was gold color)on I-465 in Indy. Speedo topped out at 160 and it probably would have done it if asked.

By the time they put the 12 into the E body, the car was quite a bit larger and most of the cooling problems had been solved. The 12 was only 326 cubes and was very smooth with twice as many jugs as the 6. The 6 cyl was about 260 cubes with 285 horses and had more racing heritage.

Since we're all bench racing here:

120 MPH in my BMW 320i on the autobahn - I would have gone faster, but that's all there was.

My domestic record was a little better: 125 in a Merkur XR4ti - I could have gone faster, but I was a starving grad student at the time, and backed off because of fear of what a ticket for better than twice the posted speed limit would do to my insurance rates.

...I got busted in 1990 in CT on I-84 for doing 162 on my 1990 FZR 1000.

Had the same bike, gray and black. Furious ride, I ran it up to the mid 160's on several ocassions - never got busted though.

My worst ticket was for 88 in a 55, on that bike.

I had one for 102 in a 35 on an 82 GS1000 Katana, but that one got thrown out. I was 17 and riding with my dad!

I have a ZX9R Kawasaki now, it too will run up around 170 (I've seen 168 indicated, probably about 160) but I never ride it anymore....

I had a '68 Coronet at one time that I topped out at 135 going from Savanah up to Atlanta.

I did 140 in a 1990 BMW M5 on an autobahn stretch between Cologne and Bonn, Germany. And a Porshe flashed me to pass. LOL! We need an autobahn system in America. Imagine driving from NY to DC in under 2 hrs.

Nice car. Did it feel stable at 140?

A girl up the street from where I grew up used to let me drive her '73 Pontiac 455, and although I never tested its top end, the acceleration was incredible. ....Under 5 sec. from 0 - 60, I'd imagine.
