Court Date Set for 182mph Driver

LEHIGHTON, PA-September 4, 2003 — Just how fast will a Lamborghini go?

Police in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, charge William Faenza Junior was doing 182 in his Lamborghini Diablo.

Officers also charge Faenza was driving drunk. Police say they caught up with him when he pulled into a gas station.

While Faenza concedes he may have been doing 100, he denies going nearly 200 miles per hour.

He says if he was going that fast, the police would have never caught him.

Besides, Faenza says the wheels on his Lamborghini start to shake when he goes faster than 70.

He's to appear in court next Wednesday.

Coming into Frankfurt there is a long strech of road with 5 lanes of AutoBahn in both directions.

I was the passenger in one of those boat like Mercedes, a huge 4 door model with a steering wheel straight out of a Steamship and we were on our way to the Airport and were late as it was.

As we cruised in at about 3:30 am I was almost becoming comfortable while the world rushed by at 200KPH.

I was startled by the driver saying look behind us look behind us in a frantic voice, I leaned over but only saw a flash as a BMW M1 passed us doing an easy 300 KPH. I am not aggagerating when I say that he passed us as easily and as quickly as if we were standing on the edge of the freeway.

I was in love with that car...

I know that area fairly well. It is mountainous with narrows roads. I can't picture any place around there--except for the turnpike--where he could reach that speed.

Summit Point!?!? We used to go up there to watch the races many years ago. Back then, it was the home track of one P. L. Newman. Back then, I could watch him race without thinking about his liberal idiocy. He and his wife Joanne, if you know what I mean.

One time, we set the grass on fire with our bar-b-que grill (we were set up near the S turns), and just barely put it out before it turned into a major disaster.

Summit Point is really a fun, fan friendly track. It's also way fast and fun to drive.

It's a shame they get better events there. They are building a new circuit so maybe that will help.

I loved my tour in Germany (77-81). I felt safer driving down the autobahn at 100+ mph than I do driving in the US at 75 (unless traffic is light).

I drove a Volvo 242GT my last two years in Germany. Fastest I ever went was 120mph, and that was enough for me. That car purred along nicely at 90, but you could feel a difference (albeit slight) at higher speeds.

I have fond memories of weekend trips to party with German friends up on the North Sea: Spangdahlem AB to Lutjenburg (between Kiel and Lubeck - 400+ miles) in 5 hours (including 2 gas stops). I'd party all weekend, then leave my girlfriend's place after midnight on Sunday night. Sometimes I'd cruise into work in my civvies, and change into my fatigues in my office.

And how will I ever forget the summer of '79? That's another story for another day...certainly not one to tell my kids, at least until they're over 30!

Here's a synopsis: 3 month TDY at German anti-aircraft range (Todendorf), only Americans for 200 miles, nude beach 5 miles from base, Lutjenburg (tourist resort) 10 minutes from base, summertime, actual work was maybe 3 days a week, had just passed 3 years time in service (plus 1 year TIG as 1LT), and SINGLE!!!

My German really improved that summer!!!

Germany - 1970 in a Porsche 911R passed on the autobahn us 190 MPH other car Lamborghina P400 Miura

USA - 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo 160 MPH 6500 rpm rev limiter limited (slightly tweaked)

USA - 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo 145 MPH w/1500 RPM had my 25 yr old daughter and the back completely loaded w/ luggage
the victims were a 2000 Mustang Cobra and 2000 Chevy Camaro SS

The 944 was unbelieveable. It did not begin to run till about 100 which was the end of 3d gear and crusing at 100 was routine. It took a whole lot of newer car to begin to handle it and it had only been chipped and the catalytic cleaned out. Was only out run by a Lingenfelder Vete and Viper during the 4 year I owned it.

I had a 67 Volvo Wagon...... it was very fast and agile, twin stromberg carlson carburators and 4 speed transmission. It was a seperate breed from the Volvo stodge of today.

Circa early 60's hauling freight southbound on the Long Beach Freeway heading towards the folks beach house in Newport in my red vett. An Auston Healy with a 327 came up to me and we went off in a great match race......
Absolutely zero traffic, we had the place to ourselves.
Backing off at a 130 with the glare of red lights behind us brought instant panic, especially when the spot lights hit us and we were ordered out of our cars. Man, those chippies were just huge and mean.
The biggest one quietly and calmly told us to get back into our cars and follow him. We did. A few miles down the road we saw the red lights and the wreckers. We both were escorted up to the wreckage. A car had hit the side of the bridge abbutment and had been sheared in two. The drivers side was half way out on the bridge and was about 3 feet long. The right side of the car was the size of a hay bale and was still impacted onto the concrete abbutment. Originally there were two people in the car; the cops and the firemen didn't even try to remove what was left. They estimated that they had been going about 120 mph on impact.
After leaving the early dinner in the river bed, and getting some soft fatherly advice from some of the cops, we were allowed to go with no ticket. No pun intended, but that was a turning point in my driving life - made a big impact.

I just read your post regarding 135 mph being hairy, Kid that ain't even fast. Now, at 160 you gotta keep your eyes on the road, but on a clean straight open road, in a car like a Lamborghini it ain't nothing. But 182 drunk is definately crazy, and that was one lucky son-of-a-bitch.

Fastest I ever went was in my roommates 1969 Mustang Mach 1. 351 Cleveland 4 barrel. Got up to 145mph before tunnel vision set in and my foot backed off the gas. It was a little shaky on the way there, but after I past 70mph the car settled in and felt great. I wont be doing it again though...
