Court Date Set for 182mph Driver

LEHIGHTON, PA-September 4, 2003 — Just how fast will a Lamborghini go?

Police in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, charge William Faenza Junior was doing 182 in his Lamborghini Diablo.

Officers also charge Faenza was driving drunk. Police say they caught up with him when he pulled into a gas station.

While Faenza concedes he may have been doing 100, he denies going nearly 200 miles per hour.

He says if he was going that fast, the police would have never caught him.

Besides, Faenza says the wheels on his Lamborghini start to shake when he goes faster than 70.

He's to appear in court next Wednesday.

I don't know if they used a new block or just spread the six out slightly when the 4.2 was produced. I never wound any of them past 5,000-5,200; the mechanical thrashing was painful at that point.
I saw many XK engines apart and every one of them had a common fault. There was always a tiny crack in the block between the third and fouth jug. But, since they used stainless sleeves, it really didn't matter. It did convince me that considerable flexing was going on--certainly enough to snap a crankshaft.
There was a Jaguar dealer in Cleveland that specialized in racing these big 6's. Their literature recommended a special crank, bigger torsion bars and solid wheels. They claimed something like 350 horsepower out of one of their replacement engines built for such service.

Wow, 25 years ago I got my Jag to 144 and made a 45 minute trip in about 15. Last weekend I took a Mercedes to 105 for about a minute and called it quits. Age, what a bitch.

That would've been 1968 or 69...
I was trying to stay one step ahead of the draft board at the time. My fifth (and last, thankfully) year at the University, 1972, I was 1-A and they held a lottery. They drafted everyone up to number 121 and stopped. My number was 128.

The last time I drove much over the limit was 1985, coming back from a gun show in Macon, Georgia.

Going up, I had noticed a nice long stretch of back road with no sideroads and no intersections for miles, so returning home, I hit the KC Hiliters and opened her up. '72 Rally Nova, supercharged 350, pinned the speedo at 120, and had about a quarter-throttle left.

Saw the first intersection coming up, and backed her back down, just like the old ex-policeman who taught me a lot about a lot of things advised so long ago.

We just went to the Mephisto shoe store at Cool Springs with the whole family crew in the ML320 just now.
On the way back, I decided to punch her out a bit between Cool Springs and Concord Road (straight 10 lane)...I took the HOV lane and got her up to 110-115 or so and it seemed like nothing. Even as an SUV, a new MB still takes 100 plus on a flat interstate like sitting on the sofa.

Of course my wife was not too thrilled and reminded me about 20 times in 10 seconds that we "have babies in the back seat!!!".....I backed off knowing what's good for me and all.

Between Concord and Harding, I would be afraid to get anywhere close to 200MPH in anything short of an Indy car.

Yup. Had the complete Iskendarian valve train. Never had a loose stud problem with my engine.

Floated a couple of valves once, but that was my fault -- missed 2-3 shift racing a big block 'Vette one dark and stormy night! All I did was bend a couple of pushrods -- surprisingly, did not break a piston or either of the valves.

Didn't get caught but went well over 150 on San Fernando Rd. between Flethcher Dr. and Glendale Ave.in Los Angeles in 1957 in a Corvette that I was tuning up for the Riverside SCCA race. Dan Gurney drove that race for us and the car was clocked at 157 in the back straight.

At the 1957 Santa Barbara race where I met my wife I gave her a 150+ ride around Santa Barbara the nite after the race. Guess it didn't scare her too bad, we're still married after 45 years.

In 54 I went between 130 and 150 at least weekly street racing in the D Fuel 32 Roadster that we held and drag and lakes record with.

First, who would have a Lamborghini in Lehighton?

Second, how the heck can you find a straight stretch of non-mountain road that would allow you to reach that speed?

I agree with you on Jags. My wife's 2001 XJ8 Vanden Plas just sucks right down on the road at 100 mph and actually drives better than at the speed limit.
My hairiest ride was as a passenger at 105 mph in 1975 in an Electra 225 on Highway 280 behind Stanford University. The nose came up so high that we must have been steering on dime-sized patches of rubber. On the big wide curve at Page Mill Road we just floated -- using all three lanes and much of the shoulder to make the turn. This is the very definition of being a stupid teenager.
BTW, the Buick belonged to the father of the driver. It was brand new, with less than 50 miles on it -- in other words, completely un-broken-in We must have bent every ring on every piston and unseated every valve -- not to mention blowing out the head gasket. The car was dripping oil by the time we got home. My buddy's dad spent the next six months endlessly taking it back to the dealership, complaining that he'd been sold a lemon. Finally he gave up and sold it.
To this day, I doubt he knows the real story . . .
