I drove a 1989 Chrysler LeBaron 120MPH and it scared the crap outta me.

Why did I drive that fast you may ask?

Well, at 60 MPH I was getting 24 miles per gallon according to the computer, so I wanted to see if I got half that at twice the speed.

It turned out to be 16 miles per gallon at 120.

Ah, the stupidity of youth...

I tell you what cars are stable at high (100 mph - 120 mph) speeds (although they may take forever to get up there): Old (pre '74) Volvos -- Models 164 and 1800. Solid as rocks.

"Anyone here know the top speed of most cop cars? I'd imagine 120 - 130."

I've known people to outrun police cars. But I've never known anyone who has outrun a police radio.

Sounds fun except for the traffic in the other lane...pedestrians...kids on bikes ...stuff like that
that can leave a dent in daddy's car

...I got busted in 1990 in CT on I-84 for doing 162 on my 1990 FZR 1000. Cops were seriously pissed. I had no idea they were chasing me. It was thrown out of court because at that time, it was against State Police procedure to continue a prusuit if the cop loses sight of you, which apparently, they did on a few ocassions.

All those mild sweeping turns on the highway become full on turns of the butt puckering variety. I did this at about 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning on my way into Danbury, where there is a huge local MC hangout. I'm older now and have gained a sense of mortality, thank God.

Now you did it...

Hot Rod Lincoln- Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen

My pappy said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln"

Have you heard this story of the Hot Rod Race
When Fords and Lincolns was settin' the pace?
That story is true, I'm here to say
I was drivin' that Model A

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up
That Model A Vitimix makes it look like a pup
It's got eight cylinders, uses them all
It's got overdrive, just won't stall

With a four-barrel carb and a dual exhaust
And four-eleven gears you can really get lost
It's got safety tubes, but I ain't scared
The brakes are good, tires fair

Pulled out of San Pedro late one night
The moon and the stars was shinin' bright
We was drivin' up Grapevine Hill
Passing cars like they was standing still

All of a sudden in a wink of an eye
A Cadillac sedan passed us by
I said, "Boys, that's a mark for me!"
By then the tail light was all you could see

Now the fellas was ribbin' me for bein' behind
So I thought I'd make the Lincoln unwind
Took my foot off the gas and man alive
I shoved it on down into overdrive

Wound it up to a hundred and ten
My speedometer said that I hit top end
My foot was glued like lead to the floor
That's all there is and there ain't no more

Now, the boys all thought I'd lost my sense
And telephone poles looked like a picket fence
They said, "Slow down! I see spots!"
The lines on the road just look like dots

Took a corner; sideswiped a truck
Crossed my fingers just for luck
My fenders was clickin' the guardrail posts
The guy beside me was white as a ghost

Smoke was comin' from out of the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac.
Knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass
Don't you know by then we'd be low on gas?

We had flames comin' from out of the side
Feel the tension, Man! What a ride!
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly!"
And that Caddy pulled over and let us by

Now all of a sudden she started to knockin'
And down in the dips she started to rockin'
I looked in my mirror; a red light was blinkin'
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln!

They arrested me and they put me in jail
And called my pappy to throw my bail
And he said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!"

"157 in a '70 Delta 88. County Road 5 West of 7th street in Northern Anoka county.

I had a '68 Coronet at one time that I topped out at 135 going from Savanah up to Atlanta.

Driving fast is FUN. Dangerous. But FUN."

I hope you don't live up to your Freep handle. Looks like you might though.

I am normally a very laid back driver but one time I cruised at roughly 140. I say roughly because I had to later calculate the speed by the tach reading.

I was driving on I-10 between Crestview and Milton Florida when a Porsch passed me. I decided this was an oportunity to make some good time by following a few hundred yards behind him, keeping an eye out for the patrol. We drove together for maybe three or four miles at 85 when I guess he decided to lose me.

For some reason I decided to keep up with him. After a few minutes I noticed my tach was at 6000 rpm and I couldn't go any faster. I was staying right with him tho. We had driven maybe 10 miles like that, the old pickup going as smooth as silk when I glanced at the heat gauge. It was all the way over so I slowed back down to 70.

The Ford had a 460 and I had done a few minor things such as dual exhausts, replacing the valve timing gear with an older model which corrects Fords retarding of it in newer models, and an Edelbrock carb. The pickup was not all that great on the acceleration but really did have a top end.

Toyota Corona, twin-cam two liter engine on the Tomei Express in Japan between Yokohama and Hamamatsu very early on a Sunday Morning.

I had gotten the machine used from a hot-rodder who had added headers and God knows what else. I remember the speedo at 210 kph on one stretch and thought I was doing Warp 9, when a silver Jag came up from behind and totally blew me away. Have no idea how fast he was going.

The only thing I can remember about that was the way my front tires seemed to float off the highway.

Fun, but spooky.

128mph, German Autobahn, BMW 325i (E36 model).

This is where the hard speed limiter kicks in. The fuel delivery esentially stops, so the instant imbalance of wind resistance (formerly balanced by the power) feels like it hits you in the face: "whump". I describe it as "a two-by-four in the spokes".

Not dangerous, just startling.

Oddly, the ONLY accident I have ever had was when I was 16. I was doing 50 MPH in a '73 Dodge Club Cab. One of my history books slid off the seat when I took a corner. Lodged up under the clutch peddle. Trying to get it out from under, I ended up in the ditch.

In almost twent years of driving, I've only had one speeding ticket. I just got that about two weeks ago. 71 in a 60 while keeping up with traffic.

Go figure...

135mph (several times) in my Honda S2000. At that speed
it's like sitting on your sofa. It will cruise highways very
comfortably at 100mph.

At Summit Point raceway, before I have to haul it down for
turn one (late apex hairpin) I can just touch 120mph.

Great car.
