Powell: Road map isn't dead
Jerusalem Post ^ | Sep. 4, 2003 | JANINE ZACHARIA

WASHINGTON US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Wednesday dismissed Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's characterization of the road map as being "dead," and insisted the step-by-step peace plan is the only mechanism for ending violence and creating a Palestinian state.

"We didn't deal with Yasser Arafat when we were putting the road map together.

And so his comments don't mean a whole lot to me, and I'm not responding to them in any way," Powell told reporters at the State Department, where he outlined a draft resolution the US is submitting to UN Security Council members calling for a multinational force in Iraq.

Powell said all that matters is that PA Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, Washington's interlocutor, "is committed to the road map."

"I believe the road map is the way forward," Powell said.

He again called on Arafat to transfer responsibility of all of the Palestinian security services to Abbas.

Issuing a warning to both sides, which he has made frequently in recent weeks, Powell said: "If they don't like the road map, I don't know what they will like, because the road map shows the way forward to the end of violence, the end of terror, and the creation of a Palestinian state.

"That was the president's vision put forward on the 24th of June last year.

And if that doesn't work, then, as I have said previously, we're going to go off into a ditch or over a cliff."

Powell did not address the tenuous state of Abbas's rule, or that the Palestinian leader may have narrowly averted a no-confidence vote that had been scheduled for Thursday.

He also ignored a question on whether Israel should expel Arafat, though US officials have said in the past that they oppose his expulsion.

"I believe the road map is the way forward," Powell said.

Since the launch of the roadmap, over 70 Israelis have been murdered by Arab terrorists.

Terrorism Works.

"We didn't deal with Yasser Arafat when we were putting the road map together.

But you are dealing with the Palestinian Authority regime. Would you deal with the Taliban if Mullah Omar wasn't there?

The streets of Jerusalem and the Holy Jewish Temple were walked upon by Jewish Kings and Prophets long before the 7th century C.E. when a man named Mohammed had a vision that he was the last chosen prophet of G-d, the G-d they called Allah. Mohammed was driven out of Mecca by the Arab community and fled to Medina which had three Jewish tribes. Mohammed offered himself to the Jews as G-d"s (Allah) final Prophet.

For 19 months Mohammed offered his "quibla" (direction of his prayers) toward Jerusalem as a "confidence-building gesture", until the Jews refused to believe his claims and totally rejected him. Then Mohammed gathered the pagan desert tribes under his visionary image.

Mohammed used the trick of a temporary truce (permitted in Islam) to make a treaty called the Hudaibiya Treaty with the Jewish Koraish tribe. But, in 628 C.E. at the Khaidar Oasis, Mohammed killed them. Arafat often claims that the Oslo Treaty is similar to the Hudaibiya Treaty which Mohammed violated with impunity when he was militarily stronger. (4)

funny he would say this.
some of us think we are already there.

jews mostly.
Bush had NO business approving or prompting for a two-state solution... the arabs don't want it. They want dead jews... and no Israel. Bush is ignoring all who tell him differently it seems.

And the foolish ones at the state department erroneously believe they can change the leopard's spots and remove the scorpions "sting". Unbelievable.

It's dead, Jim. Even AraRAT realizes that, though his realization is based on that he thinks he can get closer to the goal of no Israel though other means and can't get any closer through the "road map".

Powell: Road map isn't dead

So you say Colin. What about Israelis? How many more of them are dead from terrorist attacks since you've been following the map from Neville Chamberlain's Atlas?

Obviously he hasn't read a 1:50,000 in a long time, other wise he would recognize a detour or road block that needs to be eliminated.

Colin, after twenty years of abject failure, don't you think a completely different approach is needed.

This is exactly way big government is such a failure. They keep trying the same failed policies over and over. Because like finding a cure for cancer, there is no longer a need for all the doctors who make a living treating it.

I would say a good third of the State Department employees would no longer be needed if this problem in Israel was solved. It reminds me of what Ann Coulter said the other day. After 40 years of the war on poverty, a failure no matter how you look at it, it won't go away, because now its an entrenched bureaucracy.
