Perhaps Bush's new commerce czar will decree some laws against corporate prostitution.

This is as bad as MS selling them an OS. Too bad they can't be embargoed. And watch out: to quote Lenin, even when appropriate, leads people to believe you are a Marxist, even when you are not.

US hardware companies should not be supporting "Red Flag Linux", the official operating system of the PRC.

They should only be offering them "Red Hat Linux", if not something of significantly truer American herritage like Unix or Windows, and keep the source closed.

Course that's just my opinion, I'm sure many of you M$-haters are just tickled silly about this, so long as it didn't go to M$, right? This must be a great day for Linux lovers, especially those in Red China.

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that YOU were a Linux lover. They know who they are on here. Thanks for posting this.

Spent the afternoon trying to get a balky old Compaq Presario to run Linux. Lindows was too "big". DamnSmallLinux ran but only in terminal mode. Finally got Knoppix in TWM mode to work. What fun.

I've always found it interesting that the Chinese government decided not to go for Microsoft products...the rationale was that they did not want to be dependent upon Redmond, Washington for upgrade, or bug repair, or anything else (backdoors...) that appeared in the millions of lines of code. What an interesting decision taken on grounds of national security.

I don't think that China is going to get away with this. SCO is sure to get on them over their code in the Linux kernel.

Not that they'll actually point out which bits of code in the kernel is theres. But I expect the Chinese government to be hit with a massive invoice any day now...

China has been changing the kernel for years now. They need a reliable OS to run on the super computers they aquired durning the past White House admin.
I wouldn't put a red flag Linux CD anywhere near my system.

While I like and use Linux, I would never use their software. Regardless of how good it is, I am sure it will be spyware and that's why I do not run Windows.

Well, I hope Red Flag buys new equip for their website. It's slower than hell...

Think they need new translators too. Here is an excerpt (faux pas?) from there announcement concerning working with HP:

The Red Flag Software Company cooperates with HP Company, and jointly works out Itanium2 solution
Time:2003-05-29

"¡¡¡¡April 21st 2003, ¡°make good use of chances, and detonate popularity¡± ¨Cthe press release of HP Itanium2 solution is being held in Shanghai. "

Personally I think o/s wars aren't the best use of time. Gave it up trying to beat the Warped users over the head. Use what's best. I can make money off of either :-)

Boy, are there some woefully uninformed comments on this thread.......unreal.

This is a geo issue. In the Americas and most of Asia Pacific, Red Hat is king when it comes to Linux (although TurboLinux still has a major following in Japan). In EMEA (Europe Asia Middle East), you have SuSE as a major player....one that's making significant inroads into the Americas as well for various reasons. Red Flag is the big dog in China and making their own inroads in other Asian markets.

It's a damned operating system, folks. When in Rome................so to equate this as treason on the part of HP or anyone else is ridiculous.

Hi all,

I don't mean to piddle on anyone's petunias, and I'm in sync with the basic message here, but the Lenin quote seems to be an urban legend. Some years ago, Wllliam Safire wrote in his "On Language" column in the Sunday New York Times Magazine that he had asked the Library of Congress to document the quote, or anything like it. They could not. I will happily stand corrected if anyone can provide a checkable citation that pans out.
