A giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors.

But for those fearing Armageddon, don't be alarmed -- the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000.

Asteroid "2003 QQ47" will be closely monitored over the next two months. Its potential strike date is March 21, 2014, but astronomers say that any risk of impact is likely to decrease as further data is gathered.

I believe Dr. Levy (of Shoemaker-Levy) says we will first see the one that gets us when it enters the atmosphere. He bases that on a lifetime of observation.

I was thinking a series of direct surface impacts, 24-hour intervals.

Hit that thing three or four times, it will shatter and then the last blast will scatter the fragments.

Sounds like a marketing promotion for an explosive upcoming movie, probably one in which Reuters has a financial interest.

It's just a government plot to wipe out the unfunded twelve trillion dollar baby boomer social security liability. But don't worry, we're all gonna be wiped out whether it hits or not. Enjoy it while you can. LOL

Doesn't change the numbers any.

Asteroids--even itty-bitty ones--are way too damn big for just a few nukes to do anything.

Hit that thing three or four times, it will shatter and then the last blast will scatter the fragments.

Actually, it wouldn't. There's no air to conduct the blast wave, which means that only radiation pressure will move the rocks--and that's not much of your total energy budget.

Actually, it's all a neoconservative plot, put into motion by Bush's oil cronies.

Yeah, but people win "1 in 120,526,770 odds" Powerball several times a year.
