Boeing gets $188M Air Force contract for small diameter bomb

Boeing has received a contract worth $188 million from the U.S. Air Force to continue development and production of the small diameter bomb.

Boeing will build an estimated 24,000 weapons and 2,000 carriages over the next 10 years at its production facility in St. Charles, Mo. The small diameter bomb will be used on the F-15E, the F/A-22, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems and almost all other weapons platforms.

The program is expected to generate up to $2.5 billion in sales to the Air Force, Boeing said.

The size of the bomb, 70 inches long and 7.5 inches wide, allows for each aircraft to carry a larger weapons load. Carriages hold four of the bombs and quadruple the number of possible targets destroyed per combat sortie, Boeing said.

Chicago-based Boeing Co.'s (NYSE: BA) Integrated Defense Systems unit, its largest subsidiary, is based in St. Louis and is the area's second-largest employer.

Looks like the purpose of this type of bomb would be more precision and less collateral damage. Hmmm -- less collateral damage, a term the dems did not want to hear.

Seems like a simple enough idea. Wonder why they didn't do this earlier?

Note: the B-2 carries 16 2000 lb bombs, 80 500 lb bombs. that would mean 160 each 250 lb bombs. Why send a fighter when a few bomber sorties (and we are talking about bombing) will quickly deplete your target database.

Actually they used smaller bombs during the first world war, but had to drop so many of them that they went to bigger bombs during wwII after the planes could handle the load. Still, 1000 plane raids were necessary to get enough bombs on target.

Now bombs are being guided, and initially the packages were developed for existing bombs. Now special bombs are being made for the packages. Evolution takes time. As GPS jammers become more effective, the bombs will get bigger again.

7.5 inch diameter corresponds to a 24-inch waist.

Is this your way of telling us you're built like Wonder Woman....?

When asked about outsourcing American jobs to India, the CEO of Boeing said, "Americans are not entitled to their standard of living".

Just because Boeing makes aircraft does not entitle it to benefit from contracts funded with taxpayer dollars. Boeing doesn't deserve this contract and should never have even been considered for it.

I suppose you know that, diameter-wise, you're hoping to attract women with something that promises to cause them considerably more pain than child-birth.....?

It's telescoping and changes widths to accomodate.

The goal is to reduce civilian casualties until the Dems accuse the Pres. of targeted assassination.

He can't win with them.

Well, there is always that possibility. Actually it seems to me that dragging along a 70 inch one would get pretty cumbersome.
