Maybe cut the steak up completely in pieces before you ever start eating. Small pieces.

Ahh, great tip.

Go to a lot of buffet restaurants and eat all you can to stretch your stomach. However, don't make the mistake I did and fill your plate high when you are starting to feel really full. A couple of years ago I was at King Buffet restaurant and I piled up a plate high with shrimp towards the end of my meal. Big mistake. After a few bites I was stuffed and I still had the entire plate of shrimp to finish. I didn't want to leave a full plate behind so I laboriously finished the plate off shrimp by shrimp. It got so bad towards the end that I actually counted out how many shrimps I had to go to finish them all off and counted down shrimp by shrimp until I finished.

It took me over a year before I could eat a shrimp again. And I still have trouble eating shrimp now.

Great tips, particularly wrapping the steak with the salad. You must be a doctor. I am in excellent health, and so I am not afraid of a heart attack (I am also only 30 years old). Are there any medical problems here except for choking and constipation?

Don't become a vegetarian just before the contest starts.

Wow, well, thanks. I hadn't considered that. I am generally not at all a glutton. I used to drink too much, but don't any more. I'll consider what you wrote.

thanks for the post. One of the main reasons that I got together with my wife is that she was a carnivore on a mostly hairy vegetarian campus in New York. That's not why I married her, of course, but it helped to get my attention.

It's not so much what you might do to that steak. My comment is more about "all u can eat" type competitions in general. Sorry to be a party pooper.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: wash it down with brandy, or another high-alcohol beverage (not enough to get 'faced, though). The alcohol both relaxes the stomach and anaesthetizes it.

thanks. What are you thinking exactly? Should I bring a shot or two of whiskey to have during the meal? Or should it be before? Thanks!

I never ate a 72 oz steak but I do have a funny steak story to tell involving eating lots of steak. When I lived in La-La Land, I lived in an apartment complex in the Northridge near CSUN. Anyway, there was an outdoor grill there with gas so I liked cooking outdoors rather than using my own stove. Almost every evening I cooked a couple of steaks and some potatoes and ate them all. Soon after I started this routine I noticed a family (husband, wife, 2 small kids) from India sitting at a table near me outside. All they did was stare at me while I ate. This happened for over a month. Finally, out of curiosity, I asked them why they sat near me whenever I ate my dinner outside. The man (in a thick Indian accent) explained that in his country people just aren't big eaters and they were amazed by how much food Americans could consume. So it turned out that I was sort of a sideshow act for them (and maybe the fact I was consuming their sacred cows). I was an entertainment act for them just as a snake charmer in India would be for me.

Well done is my suggestion Rodney......Easier to consume....if ya want , give me a shout when ya go do this. I'm not far from Amarillo. I'll drive over and photograph the freeper feast ! Myself and Jeff Head are planning to do it sometime in the near future also.......

Well, I picked my birthday as the date for no particular reason. I'd be happy to coordinate with you guys and do it at the same time. Let me know. I do want a month of preparation time though.
