On this day the barbarians make merry...
August 30 marks the day Turkish troops, under Mustafa Kemal entered the western Aegean city of Smyrna, modern day Izmir, after the final defeat of the Greek forces in 1922. The day, which also serves to commemorate the Turkish Armed Forces will begin with a ceremony at the tomb of Mustafa Kemal, who later founded the modern Turkish Republic and assumed the title Atatürk - Father of the Turks.

GERARD Former Ambassador to Germany
The long out of print, well known book "THE BLIGHT OF ASIA" was published in 1926 in the USA and written by the American General Consul in Smyrna in 1922, who was an eye witness of all the perils of that city and of its Christian inhabitants. This testimony comes from a high-ranking American diplomat, who served in this capacity in that part of the world for about 30 years, and was therefore a knowledgeable and impartial source.
What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

I read on a thread a year or so ago about an Armenian mountain town that had some weapons, and held off the Turks in a heroic defense. Have you heard of this?

1922? You sound as nutty as the arabs or the Bosnian Christians bitching about something that happened to them hundreds of years ago. Grow up.

Yes. When will the West wake up to the opposition that it faces (Islam)?

Kinda reminds me of the destruction in Atlanta and other cities in the South in the Civil War.

In Greece, the worst thing you can call someone is "Turk".

One half of the story is missing, and I find that placing blame on the Turks totally is misleading and WRONG.
THe Greeks and Armenians burned the city, NOT the Turks.
They swore to burn the city if the Turks took it, and they did.
The genoicide etc, I believe has been way overblown, and I think the Greeks, Armenians, etc have just as much blood on their hands. To cry that they are guiltless Lily white virgins is ridiculous in the extreme.
To hate the Turks for a "genocide" and destruction of the city is revisionist history at it's worst.
Learn from it and MOVE on, the hatred that some of you people are spouting is sad to say the least.
It is history, the people, ALL the people, Greek, Armenian, Turkish, etc, that perpetrated all of these, are all safely dead. Now learn from it and move on.
But this continued hatred of one race of people, shows the same attitude that you all seem to despise so much.
I feel bad for you guys, I really do.
It's like when I go south and some southerner calls me a Yankee. Excuse me? I didn't kill anybody in the civil war, I didn't do any atrocities personally. TO blame ME for someone elses actions, who are now ALL dead, is a little insane.
This bloodlust you guys have is shameful.

I'm glad you posted this! I had read about this atrocity by Moslems in 'Islam: The Sword of the Prophet'. It tells of an American sailor (maybe British) who was standing on the deck of his destroyer and watching a cluster of women's heads tied together like a bunch of coconuts, floating by. If my memory serves me, weren't there about 300,000 Christians butchered by the spawn of satan? I do recall the story about the Greek Patriach of the city, who was grabbed and being dragged through the streets by his beard. As the people were crying and screaming, he was blessing them with his free hand. This so angered the devil's minions that they cut off his arm then hacked him to pieces.
