This is one of those things where "I just can't help it" is entirely appropriate. The story about your son reminds me that for a teen there appears to be an almost immeasurable gulf between his age and his parent's age--so how could his parent possibly understand him? But having grown up, you see there's scarcely any time at all.

Well yeah. But the age gap between myself and my ancient forefathers, who were alive several thousand years ago, *IS* pretty large. So I hold onto that, secure in the knowledge that they couldn't possibly understand me.

(I'm not sure that is any great feat. Most people don't understand me.)
