August 28, 2003

Dear Freeper prayer warriors, please keep Ernest_at_the_Beach and his wife in your prayers.

From Ernest_at_the_Beach | 08/28/2003:

Just to let you know that my wife (Kathy ) is now in her final days. Her pain in the last few months from the cancer was constant and unrelenting .

The last several months had been very difficult as she was unable to eat well and not able to eat at all for the last several weeks.

God will be merciful soon and relieve her of the misery of the dreaded disease!

Prayers would be appreciated!

Thank you for posting this Ragtime Cowgirl... My prayers are being sent to you and your wife Earnest, that her final days may be filled with yours and God's love, for your love and faith are very evident... Thank you for trusting us with your concerns, you are in our thoughts, and in God's loving plans.

I'm in.

His email message is a lesson in what love really is. It's all about what she is going through and his desire that she not suffer. No "me", no "I", no mention of "my needs" though it obviously pains him to see her suffer.

That used to be common but that's been devalued by a society that considers "learning to love yourself" as some kind of lofty goal.

She may pass, but neither one will ever be alone. God bless both of them.

“No one has ever gone into heaven except the One Who came from heaven—the Son of Man.” John 3:13

This hymn, and Immortal Love, Forever Full, come from Whittier’s poem “The Master,” in The Panorama, and Other Poems, 1856.

Words: John G. Whittier.

O LORD AND MASTER OF US ALL

We may not climb the heavenly steeps
To bring the Lord Christ down;
In vain we search the lowest deeps,
For Him no depths can drown.

But warm, sweet, tender, even yet
A present help is He;
And faith has still its Olivet,
And love its Galilee.

The healing of the seamless dress
Is by our beds of pain;
We touch Him in life’s throng and press,
And we are whole again.

Through Him the first fond prayers are said
Our lips of childhood frame;
The last low whispers of our dead
Are burdened with His Name.

O Lord and Master of us all,
Whate’er our name or sign,
We own Thy sway, we hear Thy call,
We test our lives by Thine!

IMMORTAL LOVE, FOREVER FULL

“I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever.” Psalm 89:1

Immortal love, forever full,
Forever flowing free,
Forever shared, forever whole,
A never ebbing sea!

Our outward lips confess the name
All other names above;
Love only knoweth whence it came,
And comprehendeth love.

Blow, winds of God, awake and blow
The mists of earth away:
Shine out, O Light divine, and show
How wide and far we stray.

We may not climb the heavenly steeps
To bring the Lord Christ down;
In vain we search the lowest deeps,
For Him no depths can drown.

But warm, sweet, tender, even yet,
A present help is He;
And faith still has its Olivet,
And love its Galilee.

The healing of His seamless dress
Is by our beds of pain;
We touch Him in life’s throng and press,
And we are whole again.

Through Him the first fond prayers are said
Our lips of childhood frame,
The last low whispers of our dead
Are burdened with His Name.

O Lord and Master of us all,
Whate’er our name or sign,
We own Thy sway, we hear Thy call,
We test our lives by Thine.

The letter fails, the systems fall,
And every symbol wanes;
The Spirit over brooding all,
Eternal Love remains.

DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND

“A great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11-12

Words: John G. Whittier, in the Atlantic Monthly, April 1872.

The words are from a long, narrative poem, “The Brewing of Soma.” It describes Vedic priests going into the forest and drinking themselves into a stupor with a concoction called “soma.” They try to have a religious experience and contact the spirit world. It is after setting that scene that Whittier draws his lesson: “Dear Lord, and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways…” This hymn is as relevant today as when it was written. In a modern context, it speaks to the drug culture, and those looking for an “experience” to prove the reality of God.

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways;
Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper reverence, praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard,
Beside the Syrian sea,
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word,
Rise up and follow Thee.

O Sabbath rest by Galilee,
O calm of hills above,
Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
The silence of eternity,
Interpreted by love!

With that deep hush subduing all
Our words and works that drown
The tender whisper of Thy call,
As noiseless let Thy blessing fall
As fell Thy manna down.

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and Thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm.

I'm so upset, and so sick in my heart hearing this news. Of course I will send prayers to the Father. Ernest.. what can we do for you, is there anything?

Please tell Mrs Ernest that we send comfort, and healing prayers. Prayers of hope. Prayers for no more pain.

I will think of things to write her. I'm so sorry,.. I just wish I could take any fear and discomfort away.

May I share with you the scripture that I read to my late mother a few years ago.

Psalm 90:3-12

You turn men back to dust,
saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men."
For a thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night.
You sweep men away in the sleep of death;
they are like the new grass of the morning-
though in the morning it springs up new,
by evening it is dry and withered.

We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your presence.
All our days pass away under your wrath;
we finish our years with a moan.
The length of our days is seventy years-
or eighty, if we have the strength;
yet the best of them is but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

Who knows the power of your anger?
For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.
Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

I offer my prayer for the Lord to give you, your wife and your family the strength, wisdom and comfort to go through this difficult moment. The Lord will see you through.
