BERLIN (Reuters) - A German court handed a former postman a 10-month suspended jail sentence and 200 hours community service for failing to deliver around 61,000 letters, authorities said Wednesday.
Police discovered mounds of post that had accumulated over two-and-a-half-years filling the rooms and basement of the 36-year-old's house after locals complained about missing deliveries. The man resigned his job.
"He said he had too many letters to deliver on his round," said Bernd Lottes, spokesman for the court in the western town of Neuss. "He was hoping to deliver the other stuff when he had a bit of breathing space."

Accumulating for 2 1/2 years? It'll take another 2 1/2 years for the letters to be delivered. Hope there weren't any bill payments in those envelopes.

I told them the check was in the mail!!!

The man resigned his job. Here, he'd be entitled to fifteen years' worth of appeals.

The late Los Angeles DJ Robert W. Morgan used to always quote his derivative of 'two of the world's best lies'...
"The check is in my mouth and it won't come in the mail".

Here, he'd be entitled to fifteen years' worth of appeals. Here in the US he could be charged with 61,000 counts of Federal Crimes. Willfully delaying the mail, and stealing the mail. He'd go to jail for a long time.
How ever many years of appeals it took, he'd do it with no pay.

I guess the poor fellow never got a round tuit. Here's one:

This happened in Louisiana in the early 90's. An overworked letter carrier just deposited mail in dumpsters. I lost a whole month's worth of outgoing bills. None of my creditors would believe me even though I sent them the news articles.

Years ago I remember this happening in Valley Stream, Long Island. Whole sacks of mail were missing. They were dumped somewhere, I can't remember exactly where.
