Nobody with the name Jack Woodcock will ever get elected to the U.S. Senate from Arkansas.

I honestly didn't even notice that until you pointed that out, and I usually have what's known to be gutter humor.

That said, you never know. We had Republican Mike Cox defeat Democrat Gary Peters. Morning radio had a field day with both of them.

"PS: Are you sure Asa won't run in Arkansas, because I read off Google news today that Asa still hasn't changed his mind about making a race."

Asa has not ruled out running, but neither has he ruled it in. As I said, I hope he runs.

JohnnyZ just pointed out to me that Hardcock is running in Nevada, not Arkansas. I hope my screw-up didn't make my comment less humorous than it already was. That being said, I hope we can get a candidate in Nevada with a different name. : )

There are rumors that Vitter spends alot of time at the New Orleans brothels.

There are also rumors that the sky is pink. But the last time I checked, it was blue.

"But he'd be a natural for Nevada, which is where he's running :)"

For the good of the national party, I hope we don't have a Senate race in Nevada with a Mormon Democrat running against a Republican named Jack Woodcock. But I can see the headlines now:

"Woodcock Enters Fold"

"Reid Faces Stiff Competition from Woodcock"

"Reid Slams Woodcock on Yucca Mountain"

"Woodcock Rises to Challenge"

"Reid Chips Away at Woodcock"

This is too easy . . .

I can imagine. But in all fairness, those gentlemen were born with those (fairly common) surnames, and had they not run against each other few people would have made jokes about either one. But how do you explain former New Hampshire congressman and Senate candidate Dick Swett? If your last name is Swett, why would you run the risk of naming your son Richard? And if you do name him Richard, why couldn't you nickname him Rick or Richie or something else? And if you're a young politician with the last name Swett, and your parents nicknamed you Dick as a child, couldn't you call yourself Richard Swett in campaign filings and commercials? It boggles the mind.

Jack WOODCOCK, Please don't make the name any more unfortunate than it already is.

I don't think his name will make much of a difference.

Gibbons said that Jack was the most interested person in the Senate race that he talked to.

In fact Woodcock said he would be willing to spend %250k of his own money just to get started.

Besides this guy because of his wealth and influence in Real Estate, probably has as many political connections in Nevada as Reid does - if not more.

Heller has more experience running statewide, but he doesn't have the wealth or political connections that Woodcock has. And he didn't sound terribly interested in running against Reid.

Hell, if I was named Richard, I'd go by Rick, and my last name isn't Swett, Head, Face, etc.

Although I think a Woodcock is actually a bird...not that it matters.

ROTFL! I'm going to stop posting on this thread, or I'm going to get sued by poor Jack Woodcock. First I say he's from Arkansas, then I screw up his name and make it even worse. Pubbie, if Woodcock gets the nomination, I promise to send him $20 to make up for my unfair treatment of him.

Dan says that a woodcock is a type of bird. Funny, I always thought that it was called a woodpecker. : )

The finest major-league shortstop of the 1880s and early 1890s was John Wesley "Pebbly Jack" Glasscock (you can check out his stats at
http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/glassja01.shtml). Had his name been Harry Reid, he'd probably be in the Hall of Fame today. But can you imagine the reaction of Yogi Berra, Ted Williams and the other members of the Veteran's Committee had someone nominated for HOF induction someone called Pebbly Jack Glasscock?

Whoa! Back the Woodcock wagon up!

Harry Reid personally controls the Nevada Dem machine. NO Nevada Republican has close to his kind of connections.

Where did you hear Heller not sounding terribly interested? The only thing I've read has him going to DC to scope out their take and their involvement level (in the general election, let's not get onto Rove-in-primaries).

Woodcock is an Air Force veteran. Looks like he enlisted --at age 17 -- and later did 3 years in Vietnam.

He looks solid.

Win has the $$ to make the race competitive. I'm not clear on his abortion stance, I would presume (and very liberally presume) he's anti-partial birth, but I can say nothing beyond that with any assurance. Win could also make it competitive with African-American voters, reminding them that it was his dad who helped make them full-fledged citizens after a century of 'Rats/Jim Crow keeping them down. What's sad is that we seemed to be growing a nice farm team in the early to mid '90s in AR, but stagnation seems to be seeping in. Our inability to make breakthroughs in other statewide offices is troubling, and holding just the one federal office (down from 3 in '00), the very same one we've held since John Paul Hammerschmidt's breakthrough in '66 is also a supreme disappointment. We technically could hold all 4 House seats if we wanted to, but our candidates haven't been of particularly good quality in awhile. Huckabee's approval ratings haven't slipped that much, and he really ought to be running for the Senate seat.

I concur on Dickey, he would be a lousy candidate. Losing one's House seat doesn't make for a good Senate candidate (just ask Gary Franks). Dickey's also getting "up there" and would be 65 come January '05, not elderly, but as a rule, I get a little antsy once they start passing 62-63 for Senate seats (assuming they'll want to remain for a minimum 2 terms). One reason I was backing then-54-year old Ed Bryant over then-62 year old Lamar! Alexander in our Senate contest. The last Senator in my state to start at that age died before completing a term. He's older now than Howard Baker was after he retired in '85 and a month ago surpassed the age of Albert Gore, Sr. when he was defeated back in 1970 after 32 years in Congress.

"Where did you hear Heller not sounding terribly interested?"

When Gibbons said he wasn't running, he called up a list of potential candidates to see who might want to run in his place.

Gibbons said pretty much everyone was lukewarm to the idea (Including Heller), Except Jack Woodcock.

Woodcock said yesterday that he would be willing to spend $250,000 just to get a Senate campaign started, and would be willing to spend even more in a full race against Reid.

So it looks like we're going to have to heavily rely on multi-millionaires to expand the GOP Senate majority this year:

Jack Ryan in Illinois

Jack Woodcock in Nevada

Tim Michels in Wisconsin

As for Jack Woodcock's name, he could do what Jack Ryan is doing in Illinois ie only mentioning his first name "Jack For Senate".

Are there any multimilionares in Arkansas we can run in case Asa Hutchinson closes the door???

How much wood would a Woodcock grok if a Woodcock could grok wood ?

I'm sorry, I'm just a horrible person...

Anyone care to make a tongue-twister out of Dick Swett's name ?

Hmm...

He'd better just refer to himself as "Jack for US Senate".

On another note, why is it that millionares are so keen to run for Senate???
