Educators in elementary schools in Northampton, Mass., will be teaching > students how to curb violence as part of the Second Step > violence-prevention program, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported Aug. 20. >
Through puppets, videos, cards, and other materials, students will learn > how to manage their own emotions, as well as understand other people's > feelings. >
"When kids feel safe, liked, and cared for, it creates an environment > where they want to learn," said Woody Clift, project director for the > local Safe Schools, Healthy Students program. >
Second Step will be implemented this year in the Gateway school district.
In the fall, training for teachers in the Amherst school district will > begin. >
The U.S. Departments of Education, Justice, and Health and Human Services > established the grant program following the shootings at Columbine High > School in Littleton, Colo. >
In 2001, the Northampton, Amherst, Easthampton, Gateway and Ware school > districts received a $3-million federal grant to begin launching or > expanding the Second Step program.

Here if someone attacks your student, he is not allowed to fight back or defend himself. No matter who attacked who, both get the same punishment and both can recieve a $250.00 fine issued by the police.
