I have AVG on one computer, and Avast on another.
They both seem to work okay. You can do a google search for them, I don't have their URLs at my fingertips.
I also have one on this computer called AntiVir by H+BEDV.
It's German, I think, but I'm not paranoid. Well, I am a little.

Many AV sites will run an on-line scan for free, but it's a manual process using your Web browser.
I'd try to fix or remove/re-install Norton AV. It's done very well by me.
Freebies? I don't know...you get what you pay for...

And yes, all three have free versions for home use.
They even have updates--just like a real anti-virus program.

Suggest that you do an online scan of your computer at the
Trend Micro website. If you are having trouble loading Norton, your system may have been compromised.

I use Panda Titanium. It's been very good to my Windows.

Avast seems quite good here.

It's not free, but my company has had very good results with Command. It's fast on the updates (usually before you hear about the virus) and it has identified and isolated viruses that Norton & McAfee were unable to fix.
A few years back a customer sent in an infected disc from England. We were embarrassed to learn of the problem from another customer. Command was the only thing on the market that could clean up the mess.

I cannot recommend Trend Micro's PC-Cillin enough. Far better than Norton and I say that from first hand experience.

I use AVG, works fine, free updates and all taht goodness...

I've run AVG Free version (www.grisoft.com) for years along with ZoneAlarm free version (www.zonelabs.com) on a Win98SE box for years and have never had a problem. I also run them on a Dell Laptop with Win2000 and a Dell Desktop running XP You can also go the Gibson Research Center (www.grc.com) to run some free tests to see where you might be vunerable. I also recommend these to my clients and have never had a complaint from those who keep their products updated. (See post #11)

I use AVG. It's free, fast, and easy to use. You can get it at
http://www.grisoft.com and have it up and running within minutes.

I don't think there are any free antivirus programs for Windows, but would be interested to learn if there are. Sure there are. AVG Antivirus, Avast!, and Antivir. None are perfect, but all three of these have their fans.
AVG slowed my system way down, but it doesn't seem to do that to everybody.
I'm currently running a 30-day trial of Avast!, but I'm using this computer for both personal and business reasons, so I'm pretty sure I'll have to pay for it if I keep it. It's free for home users only.
So I'll probably end up with Antivir, which I haven't tried yet.
