Once a week we level off all the pictures and paintings in our house if we haven't had equalizing quakes in the opposite direction like one from the west and then one from the east.
Some of the so called minor ones can be quite feelable and even deadly.
Three years ago, this coming Labor Day, we had a 5.4 that caused millions of $'s in damages and hurt some people and put a young lad in the hospital with a severe brain injury. He took months to recover.
The quake was on an old fault and hadn't been active for decades. The tremor line as it moved SES was like a wall of water or mud moving very fast. Those who didn't feel that one in the middle of night have a non function CNS system.

Awwww-----c'mon! Let us have our little earthquake! We deserve it.
Look at it this way ----It is not about Torricelli who is rising from the ashes, it is not another caper by that idjut McGreevey, it is not about our corrupt leaders, ------- it is just a harmless lil ole quake! Worthy of news because it isn't. Just a little fact of nature, and it's all ours.
AAMOF - if it scared the bejeezes out of all the bears in that area, then there might be more news coming!!!! Stay posted!

Sometimes there will ones to follow.
We had rather severe 5.4 3 years ago this Labor day that caused a lot of damage and hurt people.
For about 2 weeks we had after tremors with some as high as 4. When they got to the 4 level, even the blase ones like us had eyes that look like a deer in the headlights.

The Soil Conservation Service produces books with arial photos and soil maps if you just want an overview of "what's where". I found a good overview of New Jersey Geology
here that you might find helpful. You might also find
this page useful.

If this keeps up, we may have REAL MOUNTAINS some day!

I suppose I should keep an eye out for things like small dinosaur tracks. What I think really disappoints me is that I'm interested in trilobites but that shale is a bit to the West in Pennsylvania.

Did Hillary fall down again?
Honest to God, that was my first thought when I saw this thread.Did she fall down or did a Secret Service Officer get sick of her B.S. and finally push her down.LOL and very hard!

Slight correction, the red Triassic shale of central New Jersey is not so boring as once thought....and some incredible amber including insect bearing specimens which may be among the oldest ever found.FR, some of the best threads around. :)

Well now that I have seen what it it like, I really do not want to become an expert. My daughter in-law MIGHT be on a local news channel. She has a modest home in MILFORD NJ and had a lot of 'stuff' fall off shelves and they interviewed her.
I know it was mild but it was the strangest thing I have ever felt. I thought I had dozed off 'lurcking' LOL! but it was that quick jolt. Talk about NOT having control! May all your tremors be mild!

Once they get over a certain level they get your attention.
I hope that you all have a fun event to discuss and no more.
Have a great holiday weekend!

I think this is a sign. I think someone is telling us the Rutt's Hut gathering really should have been scheduled for Sunday.

I believe an earthquake on the east coast is news. Can you imagine the coverage a hurricane or tornado in California would generate? Even a "small" one?
