Hatfill Sues U.S. Over Anthrax Probe

WASHINGTON -- The bioterrorism expert under scrutiny in the 2001 anthrax attacks filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing Attorney General John Ashcroft and other government officials of trampling his constitutional rights and using him as a scapegoat for their failure to make an arrest in the case.

Dr. Steven J. Hatfill claims that, by labeling him a "person of interest" in the case, Ashcroft and other federal authorities have destroyed his reputation and ruined his job prospects.

This is probably true. We could be so utterly screwed if a moral pygmy like Howard Dean got his facistic, grubby hands on the Patriot Act. I hope Hatfill wins and I hope The Patriot Act is thoroughly rewritten. I understand why it had to be passed, I just think it either needs a sunset provision or a less panicky rewrite.

About time! They've been doing a Richard Jewell on this guy for far too long. If any evidence existed, they'd have found it and charged him by now - NOBODY covers their tracks that well. They just don't have anyone else to look at, so they keep tormenting him.

The true test, is that now that it looks like Hatfill was innocent, what is going to be the government's response? Are they just going to settle out of court and let it drop, are they going to come out and say "we were wrong, oh and sorry about hitting you with an FBI car". At the least he deserves a public apology and for somebody to be held accountable.

If they don't, leading the public/press to Hatfill looks like a smoke screen to cover the fact they couldn't find whoever - maybe they thought it'd buy them some time, they could catch the culprit(s) and then come out and say "oh, sorry, here's the real culprit(s)".

They just don't have anyone else to look at,

An interesting take on this can be found in Laurie Mylroie's Bush Against The Beltway, in which she makes a very strong case that Iraq is the culprit, and reasons why the FBI didn't want to even consider Iraq.

Oh please, Mr. Hatfill ruined his own reputation and job prospects by embellishing his resume and getting caught at it in full public view.

No argument here.

I am sure none of us on this thread ever have been guilty of enhancing our resumes.

(Well, I'll exclude myself from that.)

However, I wonder what would happen to some of us
if we suddenly were declared a 'person of interest'
and our careers and our resumes were subjected
to great scrutiny.

He who is without sin...

Good for Hatfield; hope he wins his lawsuit. He deserves every dime he can get, IMO.

DOD certainly had no problem with it, an continued to use him.

Since he is undoubtedly talented and repsected anyway, his resume puffing is an odd aspect of him.

I think anyone who works in such a sensitive, high security field and is entrusted with biohazardous materials should be aboveboard.

So now can we got on with the real job - who REALLY made that anthrax and sent it?

OK, but the not so real job I'm interested in too. The nitty-gritty of Operation Frame Hatfill. The succession of leaked searches, bogus pseudo-science sniffer dogs, Greendale school, the box in the lake, etc., etc. And were some DOJ people susceptible to the child-like rumormongering in the bio- industry. And just why did they make the persecution of Hatfill public after the Rosenberg's and Sentate Staffers' meeting with Harp. Pressure?

So many interesting stories, a puzzle, a maze to solve. I wish Hatfill's people good luck.

what is going to be the government's response?

Ashcroft's reply to this lawsuit should be interesting reading. This suit may finally force him to go public with whatever information he had that put him on HF's trail in the first place. Information that we are not privy to or that has not leaked out, that is.

A federal law-enforcerment agent hit and run Hatfield, gave a tape of his hit-and-run to the local police, and the local police ticketed Hatfield!

Even when a driver is not negligent in hitting a pedestrian, running away from the accident scene is a crime, but of course, that only applies to the peasants.
