The Bush administration vowed on Monday to see through a U.S.-backed peace plan despite Israeli-Palestinian violence and called on Israel to meet its responsibilities to help bring about a "peaceful change."
President George W. Bush "remains committed to the course that he laid out ... because it is the only course that will bring durable peace and security," U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said of the peace plan known as the road map.
Rice, speaking to veterans in San Antonio, said progress was being made and played down the fallout from last week's suicide bus bombing and Israel's response.
"Despite the horrific events of recent days, we have seen progress towards peace for Israelis and Palestinians," Rice said. "The terrorists will not succeed."
Rice said Israeli leaders "increasingly understand that it is in Israel's interest for Palestinians to govern themselves in a state that is viable and peaceful and democratic and committed to fighting terror."
"Israel has to fulfill its responsibilities to help that peaceful change take place," she said.
Rice credited Palestinian leaders for coming out against terrorism.
"A new Palestinian leadership is emerging ... that understands and says, in both Arabic and English, that terror is not a means to Palestinian statehood but rather the greatest obstacle to statehood," she said.
"Terrorist networks must be dismantled," she said, but added: "Transforming the Middle East ... will require a commitment of many years."

Rice is just a female version of Powell, dumb as a log and fully obedient to her bosses in Riyadh.

Rice said Israeli leaders "increasingly understand that it is in Israel's interest for Palestinians to govern themselves in a state that is viable and peaceful and democratic and committed to fighting terror." And here is where that state will be located.

She must be getting ready to take over as Sec of State during the second term.

Rice credited Palestinian leaders for coming out against terrorism. She forgot to credit them with all the dead babies they just created...

Very sad indeed and the Bush administration has no idea what they are doing in the Middle East. I don't quite understand why they are doing what they are doing right now as it pertains to Israel. They are very hypocritical in their terrorist policies.
The Saudis might be holding the gun to the administrations head right now. America's security and the world economy rest on the whim of five dysfunctional Saudi families who control 60 percent of the world's oil reserves. If al Sa'ud collapses on itself it would be a threat to the American economy in ways beyond oil. Consider that Saudi Arabia is estimated to have as much as $1 trillion on deposit in U.S. banks, and another trillion in our stock market.

BARF ALERT Entirely appropriate for a story from Reuters. Wait for other versions, before getting too hot under the collar. They, as much of the lamestream media, lie by ommission much more often than they do so directly.

If US national security were at significant enough risk with Saudi Arabia and it duplicitous Wahabbist royals, I'd say depose them, seize the country (and oil) as we've done in Iraq with the idea toward democratization, and seize (not
freeze) their assets.
I think it should have been them to be taken down first after 9/11 anyway.

Our expectations of Israel are totally inconsistant with how we deal with terrorists....it's unbelievable. Why does the Bush Administration continue to tie Israel's arms around it's back?
To: El Gato
That's an interesting theory, but this is getting to be a little too old a story.

Israel fired the first rockets after the cease fire that started this all over again ! The rockets missed the car and killed some little kids and a family. They got their target but at what cost?
They needed to take some lumps and wait it out then we'd let them go take care of business !

that is a question I often ask. We seem to have two standards, we protect ourselves (naturally) but do not let Israel do the same. We need to untie the hands of the IDF and do it now. The terrorists respect only strength.
