Does it matter if Americans make stuff?
I'm using Alan Greenspan's brushoff term for American manufacturing. He used it last month during his congressional testimony, when asked about the loss of 2.7 million jobs over the past two years, most in factories and they're likely gone for good.

At least now that you admit you are a democrat, I understand why you use Charlie Rangel's talking points on the WOD threads. It all makes sense now. Why am I not surprised at your alls knee jerk reactions to my local electoral predicament.
BTW, I guess you are going to vote for Kucinich, he is for getting rid of NAFTA, and I beleive he is pro-pot also.
Hey your perfect candidate, and he has a d by his name.

People complained about mechanical production replacing human labor, but in the long run it meant products were manufactured more efficiently at a lower cost resulting a higher standard of living for all. Made by machines and made by people is still manufacturing.
So what if the slave labor wages in China mean some low tech manufacturing jobs go there. It frees up Americans for better paying high tech jobs, and the low price China products raise our standard of living. Just like we had our own slaves.
What better paying high tech jobs? And if they weren't moving to India, what do those high paying high tech jobs depend on? High tech equipment. And where is the high tech equipment and/or the components thereof made?

Is it a social stigma to declare yourself as a Republican in your hick county? Will your Democrat buddies in the Grange shun you? Are you a Democrat plant?

I told you my local electoral predicament and how I vote in local elections(try to vote for the best person in the local demo primary, since more often than not the R is usually unopposed during the primary and usually vote for the R in the general).
I was being honest, but you want to make it out to be some conspiracy. Whatever.

That is the thing with many people who support free trade, they in many cases support it because that is what they think is the "party line". As I keep on hammering, their talking points on free trade do not go beyond what Limbaugh and the WSJ editorial pages say, yet in so many threads here on FR, their debate style is as snotty as anything one would see at DU. The dogmatic free traders get so hysterical that in debats, they resort to calling people "brown shirts", thus invoking Goodwins Law.

The Federal Reserve chairman said, "Well, just remember that the nature of the economy is becoming increasingly conceptual, as distinct from physical . . . What does Greenspan mean? ... that the economy is becoming a matter of perception, rather than reality? If he's right, we're in BIG trouble.

Oh BTW, just a question, has Japan taken over the world yet? No, Japan proved to have their own problems. In any case, that was a different problem than the current outsourcing of jobs to low-wage countries. In the case of Japan, it was thought by many that they were beating us in straight head-to-head competition, through better management techniques and a more dedicated workforce. In the case of low-wage countries, however, they are beating us, to a large degree, because they have a much lower cost of living. They can hire workers at salaries that workers in this country could not survive on. Could you compete with someone whose cost of living was one fourth of yours? Under these conditions, free trade does not represent the freedom to hire the most skilled and dedicated workers. It represents the freedom of corporations to use arbitrage to benefit from the differences in the cost of living in different countries.
