Three troops killed in Basra attack
BBC World News ^ | 26 August 2003 | n/c

British troops have sealed off the area of the attack Three British troops have been killed and one seriously wounded in an ambush in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

According to reports, the soldiers' vehicle came under fire from a pick-up truck as they travelled along one of the city's main streets. There was an exchange of fire, followed by an explosion.

Soldiers have sealed off the area of the attack around the University of Basra and are searching vehicles. Journalists were not being allowed to enter the area.

"The casualty has been taken to hospital for treatment and the incident has been contained," an MoD spokeswoman said.

TV pictures from Basra suggested the situation was calm at present.

Investigation launched

"This is a difficult time for all concerned and our priority now is to inform the families of those concerned," said the MoD spokeswoman.

The ministry has started an investigation. It says it will release more details about the attack shortly. The deaths bring to 10 the number of British soldiers killed by hostile action in Iraq since US President George W Bush declared major combat operations over on 1 May.

A British soldier, Captain David Jones, died in Basra just over a week ago after a bomb attack on the ambulance he was travelling in.

The attack followed rioting over the lack of utilities in Basra as temperatures soared, but the city had been reported to be relatively quiet in the last week.

Did you know it was the Red Vietnamese who ousted the Khmer Rouge? And that the Khmer Rouge were backed by China--who were then our col war "allies". The same Khmer Rouge which America recognized having a seat at the UN over the Vietnamese and Russian backed Cambodians.

Yet even after the mayhem was brought to an end by the Vietnamese invasion of the country in 1979, when the world learned the full extent of the crimes committed, the Chinese insisted that Pol Pot's government in exile be recognized as the legitimate representative of Cambodia at the United Nations. Every U.S. administration during the next 13 years endorsed the Chinese line, and it was the U.S. that forced the opposition coalition led by Prince Sihanouk to form a partnership with the bloodstained Khmer Rouge.
President Carter's National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski has admitted, "I encouraged the Chinese to support Pol Pot. . . . Pol Pot was an abomination. We could never support him but China could." But the U.S. did support Pol Pot covertly, including whitewashing his crimes. As Ben Kiernan points out in an indispensable Yale University Law School monograph entitled "Genocide and Democracy in Cambodia," the CIA in May of 1980 "denied that there had been any executions in the last two years of the Pol Pot regime." In fact, half a million innocent people were killed during that period. Even well after the "killing fields" were unearthed, the U.S. continued to legitimize the Khmer Rouge, voting at the U.N. Geneva Conference in 1981 to defeat an ASEAN proposal that the Khmer Rouge be disarmed.

Did the ambushers get caught or killed? They never mention that in any of these "quagmire" stories.

I have a questions for you.

Do you take the Islamic fanatic's threats lightly?

What do you think should have been done in response to 9/11, the bombing of the 1993 WTC bombing, etc.?

Kill the Iraqi threat and move on. I don't care if they have electricity afterwards. I don't want US soldiers directing traffic. Our goal should be terror killing not nation building. Let the Scandanavians and Japanese do that do that.

Is it worth it? Is it worth losing the White House, losing the Supreme Court for generations, losing the social battles here in the US all for some country of really minimal importance to us?

What are you talking about? What does Iraq have to do with the SCOTUS?

In my opinion, we lost the battle over the SCOTUS a long time ago. Most lawyers will always put their class solidarity above principle: sharing the same "disdain" for the Constitution as it was originally written earns them the respect (and lucrative poisitions) offered by their colleagues in crime.

What does this have to do with Iraq?

Please detail the connection between Saddam hussein's Iraq and 9/11. How many of the hijackers were Iraqi, from where did they get their money and what if any other connections did Saddam Hussein's Iraq have with 9/11? If you can show a connection here, I'll be glad to say the whole Iraqi invasion was no mistake, but was a high priority.

Yep the North Vietmanese fianlly did after 3,000,000 people had been murdered overthrow the Khmer Rouge.

Huh, no mention by you that the Viet Cong and the Khmer Rouge, were actually allies against the American military during the Vietnam War, and they also had an ally in the American press.

But what they hey, you are into revisionist history.

Oh BTW, did you notice that the Khmer Rouge massacre happened under Carter's watch.

President Carter's National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski has admitted, "I encouraged the Chinese to support Pol Pot. . . . Pol Pot was an abomination. What this has to do with Iraq is that Bush's support is slipping daily and I fear that like his father (who had 91 percent support after the 1991 Gulf War with Iraq), he will not be reelected because he focused on a country of minimal strategic importance to the United States while being perceived as ignoring domestic issues.

The relevance of SCOTUS is that you have to control the White House to appoint its members.

The Khmer were no where near Vietnam. The Khmer originated on the other side of Cambodia and did not perate near the Vietnamese border. Revisionisim seems to be your trick not mine.

You live in Scotland, why should you all of the sudden care about American soldiers.

Sheesh, it was like when you posted that thread about Dr. Laura becoming disillusioned with modern day Judaism.

You admitted that you never heard her on the radio and yet you seemed compelled to comment about her.

Huh, I guess according to you the campus leftists were just wrong about protesting against Nixon going into Cambodia in late April, 1970.

Also according to you Kent State should have never happened, since your comrades on the left were wrong in the first place.

You mean I can't be a Scottish immigrant? I must be the last White naturalized citizen to America.

Oh sheesh, now you are going the martyr route.

Whatever psuedo-Braveheart, it seems you are more proud of being Scotish than being an American, by your homepage on FR.

You mention your birthplace, rather than your current residence in America, plus you added a lot of sci-fi gobbdleygook.

JMO, it seems you are a citizen of your own mind.

Oh BTW, I am a resident near the city of Pittsburgh, PA, in the USA.

It is kinda of sad to see someone dying on stage, though.

Nah, IMO, you were sad to begin with.

BTW Destro, in which region of the US do you live in(if at all).

You were the one in reply #53 who basically stated that you were a resident and citizen of the US.

Direct question, are you(Destro) a resident of the US or is your home Scotland.

Simple question, but I surmise that I will get a twisted answer.
