Kids Eating Park Plants for High

BERKELEY, Calif. _ Three high school students who nibbled on a plant in People's Park in Berkeley in an apparent attempt to get high landed in the hospital instead, authorities said.

Two 17-year-old boys who each ate several blossoms from an angel's trumpet plant were in good condition at a local hospital.

The third student, a 16-year-old girl who ate only one flower, was treated and released.

"Our understanding is that they had heard from somebody in People's Park that this would be a legal high," a spokesman said. Instead, "they were incoherent, and muscular control of their bodies seemed to have largely gone out," Fraser said.

Dude, you have to prepare the flower first. Not just show down like a hog.

It would be devastating to be a parent and suddenly realize that one's children are that stupid.

And now they'll ban datura? After all, it must be a "gateway drug". (To DMT?)

That would be funny. The whole solanacea family would mess up anyone who wanted to be. Henbane, belladonna, datura stramonium, the leaves of the tomato plant, anything on a potato plant but the tuber, bittersweet nightshade, etc.

It's kind of interesting..I met an old woman from Vermont years ago, who told me her grandmother used to smoke henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) for asthma. I pretty much laughed to myself about it, till years later I read the ingredients on a Contac cold capsule package. Hyoscyamine sulfate. Hmm. Must have been something to it.

Not my idea of a good time.

Idiots. I hope they "graduate" to cleaning toilets.

I'd hate to think these young people will be future Doctors and Lawyers.

Actually, an article from the Tri-Valley Herald says the drug from the flower also blocks you from urinating. Many times, the victim would be screaming in pain because of that. At the end of that article was this:

Anyone who eats Angel's Trumpet and exhibits symptoms should seek medical attention immediately or call the poison control hot line at (800) 876-4766.

My only thought is if you knew this hot line number beforehand, your family tree didn't fork. Oy veh!

Back in the '60's people were saying: "I'd hate to think these young people will be future university professors, journalists, and politicians."

Kids Eating Park Plants for High

Accompanying headline: "Home gardening or vegetarianism implicated as gateway activities."

Seriously, though, these kids hear about the malodorous Angel's Trumpet being a way to get high but not about all the poisonings caused by kids all across the country trying to get high off it? Well, they probably did hear about all the poisonings but were unwilling to let anything dissuade them from what they wanted to hear--typical human behavior.

"typical human behavior"

Which is damn near impossible to control.
