This has been a problem for years.

When we were in England back in the early 80s I picked up a copy of Punch and this was the hot topic. Some unknown parodist of Byron had written the following:

The isles of Greece! The isles of Greece!
Where only burning noses peeled
And bathers battled with police
When naughty portions were revealed.
Now decent folk are forced to bear
The awful sight of pubic hair.

Well, I suppose it wasn't very funny then because I didn't get it. Could be just me though.

How hypocritical of my Greek ancestors given their remarkably tolerant attitudes toward sexual escesses and orgiastic behavior at many of the Greek islands in the summer months. Many of the resorts and attendant businesses actually feed off the tourists and welcomes them - the more the merrier.
Hopefully, this latest incident demonstrates a new conservative attitude arising from the amoral Socialist politics lf the last 30+ years. But I rather doubt it and think this reaction is politically motivated - The British after all supported the US in Iraq and hold the Parthenon Marbles which is an afront to the honor of Greece.

What Greek ancestors have you known? Even during the pagan era such scenes were forbidden in public. In fact public drunkenness was frowned upon by the Greeks. The Greeks as orgiastic hedonists comes from the exaggerated imagination of Victorian era historians.

These people are causing troubles, and it's not only them running around naked. They are dying and fighting and wrecking.

You are absolutely 100% right. I was referring to the hedonism/socialism of the modern Greeks (my counterpart generation) and not the generation preceding them.

In any case, things have gotten out of hand big time since the 1960s and not even the arch-conservative archbishop Christodoulos has made much headway upon the younger generation.

Why is the drinks industry given a free run at Britain's teenagers by advertisers and by the misguided liberalisation of the licensing laws north and south of the border?

Just remember that alcohol is not a drug.
