WFLA | August 22, 2003 | WFLA

Just heard on Tampa Radio news WFLA Terry Schiavo's review has been denied - the original judge will now set a time to pull Terri's feedings and start starving her...

God help a country where this is countenanced.

"Does the husband have life insurance on his wife?"

I have some other questions. (1) Where did this "medical fund" come from, (2) Would any money left from this "medical fund" revert to him after she's dead and (3) Can the husband divorce her?

I am a Grandpa and thus at this stage of life I give more advice than I take.

My advice to you, watch the video next time it's on Fox or another station and decide for yourself.

Well, the feeding tube removal could bring death in less than 40 days, but didn't the Northern Irish activist Bobby Sands take 40 days to die from his hunger strike in 1981?

It takes a long time to starve to death, but death by dehydration is considerably quicker. If the tube is removed, this woman's body will no longer be alive within a matter of days. As to whether she will suffer -- from what I've read, a panel of doctors examined her last winter -- two chosen by the husband, two chosen by the parents, and one chosen by the judge. Three of the five (the husband's doctors and the judge's) said she is in a vegetative state, which means that she has only autonomic reflexes. If they are correct, any suffering she endures will be purely reflexive.

Were these liberal judges appointed by the late liberal Governor Chiles, or elected? I do hope that the Schindlers can bear this tragedy, but I don't see how they can. They will develop a hatred for government, I suspect.

It's not just this one judge -- and I have no idea if he is a liberal. This case has been up to the state supreme court three times, and it has been up through the Federal court system, as well -- including an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused even to hear the case. That means that of the five moderate to conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court, they couldn't find four who thought there was any miscarriage of justice going on (four being the number needed to accept a case for a hearing at the SCOTUS).

I'm reminded of the scene in the movie "The Beach", when the gang drags their friend who has been attacked by a shark and who is incessantly screaming in pain, out into the jungle to die.

Finally Leonardo DeCaprio is forced to hold his nose and mouth, forcing him to slowly suffocate to death.

(1) Where did this "medical fund" come from,

It came from a malpractice lawsuit.

2) Would any money left from this "medical fund" revert to him after she's dead

Yes.

(3) Can the husband divorce her?

Yes.

Gee, Brandon, thanks for the assurance that the U.S. Supreme Court could find no "miscarriage of justice" here. Now I can sleep at night!!!! Isn't American justice assuring?

If Terri Schiavo were a Siamese cat, the feeding tube could not be removed from here. This would violate federal laws forbidding cruelty to animals. The American people will in time one by one rue the day they applauded the "need" for euthanasia.

As I recall from the 2000 election issue in FL, the state Supreme Court had 8 or 9 liberal Democrats, all appointed by liberal Governor and former Senator Lawton Chiles. Is that correct?

I hope the poor Schindlers never voted for Lawton Chiles. It must be a horror for them to know that he appointed the judges who will starve their poor daughter to death. Shame on the FL people for electing Lawton Chiles, whose "compassion" is sorely lacking today.

Apples and oranges. If she were a cat, they'd give her a shot of morphine and get it over with.

I do not advocate euthanasia for human beings. However, I do work in a hospital, and it is a fact that sometimes a human body can live for a very long time after the person who inhabited that body is no longer there. The majority of the court appointed medical experts appointed to review her condition have concluded that Terri Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative state, and will never recover. Some video images have been posted on the Internet, but I promise you that a layman cannot tell just by looking at a video image whether a patient is in a persistent vegetative state. People, especially grieving relatives, sometimes see things that aren't really there, or interpret autonomic motions as being volitional, because they want so badly for it to be true.

The Schnidlers have had their day in court -- they've had ten years in court. They have not found one single judge in either the state or Federal judiciary who would side with them. They have failed to persuade any state or Federal prosecutor that a crime has been committed. And all the uninformed hysteria in the world is not going to change those facts.

Brandon, whether you realize it or not, you did just endorse euthanasia!

Theodore, whether you realize it or not, you have just demonstrated that you do not understand what euthanasia is.

Quoted "No, actually, it is not. Ventilator support and tube feedings are both examples life sustaining treatment. They fall in the same category, and they can each be legally and ethically withheld under the appropriate circumstances.

I take it you advocate death by starvation? Why not just blow the woman's brains out. Surely that would be more humane than starvation. We don't want the death people for violent criminals but hey lets kill the helpless instead. What is this marxist ideology? Just friggin curious?
