The Purpose of a Great Party: Columnist Joe Armendariz Endorses Tom McClintock for Governor
McClintock is true to conservative principles
"Abraham Lincoln said the purpose of a great Party isn't to defeat the other Party. The purpose of a great Party, according to the Great Emancipator, was to provide superior leadership. Lincoln went on to suggest that the way to serve your Party best, is to serve your country first.
With all due respect to each and every one of the prospective candidates lining up to serve this great state as its next Governor, one individual stands out from the rest and has proven himself to be a great leader. First elected to the State Assembly at the age of 26, within two years Tom McClintock was serving our Party in a leadership position. And what a leader he has been.
They say you can't hold a good man down and that cream rises to the top, so it is with Senator McClintock. He is a man utterly incapable of compromising his principles or acquiescing to political expediency. When one considers the fiscal crisis California finds itself in, it is impossible to imagine a more suitable remedy then to elevate McClintock to the office of Governor.
Common sense says that when you have a medical problem, you consult a doctor. When you have a legal dispute, get a lawyer. If you spot an intruder entering your property, call the police. When your state is mired in fiscal chaos, due to out-of-control spending and excessive regulation, who better to call then the only man in California who consistently projected correctly the magnitude of the crises of the 1990s and was consistently among the most accurate forecasters of the effects of state tax and spending policies?
Senator McClintock is that individual and Senator McClintock is exactly what California needs. While there are some who argue that vision is being able to read and understand the polls, my favorite definition of vision is the ability to see that which is invisible to everyone else. Senator McClintock saw the fiscal crisis we are in long before anyone else was even paying attention. His program to rescue California, is exactly what any competent doctor would prescribe. If the patient is bleeding, stop the bleeding. If stuck in a hole, stop digging.
Much has been said lately about the demographics of those running for Governor. Senator McClintock has been criticized for his view on the sanctity of life and even for being (gasp); white. But, McClintock is more than simply flesh and bones encased in white pigment, he epitomizes courage, he is intellect personified and he demonstrates a ruthless commitment to personal integrity.
While poll numbers certainly matter, here a few other numbers worth considering:
California spends $130 billion dollars a year on government, over $40 billion on education, and yet in terms of academic achievement, our schools are ranked 35th in the nation, our crime rate exceeds 41 other states and we rank 47th as far as the percentage of residents without health insurance, over 1 million of them children.
42 of the 50 states have a lower, per-capita tax collection rate then we do and between 1991 and 2001, the growth rate of taxation more than doubled the growth rate in personal income. And since January of 2001, California has lost 293,000 manufacturing jobs. Quick, is there a pro-family-fiscal-conservative in the house?"

According to the Calif. Secretary of State at the website here
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_j.htm McClintock's two vehicle license fee petitions (#996 and #997) are "circulating", as of the last website update date (8/20/03).
Does this mean that the petitions are available for signing? If so, where is the campaign and the publicity?
Also it seems to me that McClintock was the right person at the right place at the right time for getting these petitions in the mill. It seems to me that he deserves more credit and should get more publicity from the media as a result. Is this happening, and if not, why not?

Excellent point Steve! I am waiting for someone to explain to me how Florida can operate with NO STATE INCOME TAX, a lower sales tax than CA, and every car in FL can be registered for $40 a year while we are getting screwed at every turn.(but I won't be holding my breath waiting for an answer from the liberals). VOTE4MCCLINTOCK or pay the consequences!

how Florida can operate
It's gotta help that Jeb is in there. I keep hearing that the Dems want to impose income taxes or even taxes on SERVICES (doctor's visits, etc.), but such measures stand no chance of getting past Jeb's desk.

My point is that if states like Florida and Texas can operate without a state income tax why can't California? The answer is "We Can!"

OK, the story is that the SofS has officially OK'ed the partitions. However, they are too big (8.5"x14", doublesided) to post online for folks to download and print, and the hardcopy printing is not done yet, so the campaign folks are downplaying the petition status at the moment, to maximize the effectiveness of an official announcement which is expected to occur sometime next week. Meanwhile, folks can sign up for getting petition hardcopies at
