One of the accused Bali bombers says the Kuta attacks were originally intended to take place on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States.
Ali Imron says the alleged plot leader, Imam Samudra, said at a planning meeting in Solo that he wanted the attack to take place on September 11, to mark the New York and Washington attacks a year earlier.
The reason the bombing occurred on October 12 instead was because that was when the bombs were ready, Ali Imron told the court.
He said that fellow suspects Dul Martin and Idris had returned from a scouting trip to Bali, recommending a Saturday night as the best time for an attack.
Ali Imron, the only one of the key Bali bomb suspects to express remorse and give significant evidence against his co-accused, today said targeting the nightclubs at Kuta was wrong and not what was meant by Jihad.
A proper target would have been the Pentagon in the United States, he told the court.
