NFL fans won't pass on Rush (Great column on old El Rushbo!)

NFL fans won't pass on Rush

By RAY McNULTY
August 20, 2003

For as long as I can remember, we've been getting our nightly network news delivered from the left.

And that was supposed to be OK.

Dan Rather, who succeeded Walter Cronkite at CBS, spoke at a Democratic fundraiser, constantly referred to Kenneth Starr as "Republican independent counsel" and called Bill Clinton an "honest man."

And that was supposed to be OK.

ABC's Peter Jennings, a Canadian, refused to let country music star Toby Keith sing his rousing, patriotic song, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," on the network's Fourth of July special.

And that was supposed to be OK.

We've got National Public Radio, the New York Times and CNN (Clinton News Network?), all of which claim to be "objective" in their journalism but almost never see things the right way.

And that's supposed to be OK.

But ESPN announces that it is adding Rush Limbaugh to its "Sunday NFL Countdown" show.

And, apparently, that's not OK.

Why? Because Limbaugh espouses conservative views.

Because Limbaugh sometimes says stuff that isn't politically correct.

Because Limbaugh, whose top-rated radio show attracts a daily audience of nearly 20 million, has made a lucrative career of challenging the words and deeds of those on the opposite side of the political fence.

So his listeners love him, and liberals - especially militant feminists, environmental extremists and anyone who believes the federal government is the answer to all of life's problems - hate him.

Which makes him a bold, controversial and interesting choice for his new TV gig.

According to ESPN, Limbaugh is going to provide the "voice of the fan" and help spark debate on the cable network's popular, NFL pregame show, hosted by Chris Berman. And for that role, he is well-equipped.

Limbaugh loves football, particularly the NFL, and he seems to be an knowledgeable fan.

He is not shy about giving his opinion.

He is a gifted communicator who knows how to make his point and do so in a calculated, colorful and compelling way.

Will his political views occasionally creep into his on-air contributions? Probably.

But when they do, rest assured there will be at least a hint of humor.

Fact is, Limbaugh can be very entertaining. And he will bring something new, maybe something unique, to a show that is already fun to watch.

ESPN's plan is to have Limbaugh provide a 90-second opinion piece - an oral essay - on whatever aspect of the NFL is in the news that week, then participate in the impromptu banter with Berman and the other analysts.

I, for one, can't wait to see how he fits in and hear what he has to say. (Then again, I also enjoyed Dennis Miller's now-defunct contributions to Monday Night Football.) And I don't think I'm alone.

Limbaugh will bring more than a few of his loyal listeners - including many who wouldn't normally spend their late Sunday mornings watching an NFL pregame show - to ESPN.

And I'm betting his presence draws more viewers than it turns away.

I just hope he doesn't take himself too seriously. I hope he doesn't get caught up in all the hype and try to present himself as a football expert.

He isn't, and he's not supposed to be.

He's a fan.

Football is a game.

The show is entertainment.

The only way this thing works is if Limbaugh has fun with it - and he will.

He'll do it right.

And that's OK with me.

2:1 he doesn't make it through the season?

SOLD! 2:1 bid for $100. Clear the trade through REFCO, Iowa Grain, or Man Int'l, don't care which.

I'll be here at the end of the season, will you? (w!)

A left-fielder, I presume?

Nope, just someone who can see the truth for what it is. No reality distortion fields here when it comes to Rush.

I receieved an e-mail from the president of our Chicago (Cleveland) Browns Backers Club venting about Rush and full of all sorts of misquotes and hearsay. I gently tried to set him straight but doubt that I succeeded.

Interesting comment. I find most democrats attack the messenger when they haven't got a reply to the message.

Rush is the most successful person in the history of radio.

How dare you call him failed, even though you may disagree with his politics, methods or attitude?

Also, Rush is a very astute football fan.

Don't pin your hopes on a failed top 40 DJ.

How dare you call him failed

You need to reread what I wrote. He WAS a failed top 40 DJ who invented the word Feminazi. He has zero experience with anything in polotics, nor has any kind of background to be THE AUTHORITY on anything. For example - I could listen to Meryl Streep talk about ALAR, but I'll choose to listen to the scientists.

Rush failed like Michael Jordan failed when he didn't make the varsity team when he was in 9th grade.

I'm starting to wonder if this is not a kinda pre-warm-up for EL Rushbo on Monday Night Football. He was considered for the booth but ABC ended up hiring Miller.

Another point is that MNF has always had 3 guys in the booth for as long as I know of. Right now it's only Al and John. Something to think about anyways.

Here's the e-mail from my Browns Backers Chapter Pres. that I referred to above:

"Hi everybody, sorry I didn't get you an update before the first preseason game but I was on vacation (yeah I know "you're happy for me"). Anyway, before I get to the Browns update there is something I have to get off my chest.

Just before I left town ESPN announced that they were hiring Rush Limbaugh to do commentary on their Sunday morning pregame show. This is just TOO MUCH. Now I try to never mix football with politics because one of the things I love about Browns football is that I can root, yell and scream for the Browns and hi five and hug the fan next to me without any regard to his or her politics, race, ethnicity, color, nationality, sexual orientation or even gender identification. Under the eyes of football we are all one big family. Rush Limbaugh, whether you like him or not, is one of the most polarizing characters in the media business having said some truly nasty things about large segments of the population. For instance - commenting on Black people "Black people are only 12% of the populations who cares what they think" " The NAACP should have riot rehearsals" - Commenting on working women "I'm tired of all these feminazis talking about equality" - commenting on Latinos "they are all wetbacks anyway". Keep in mind that 65% of NFL players are Black and a large segment of NFL viewers and Browns Backers are independent women whom he would characterize as Feminnazis. Anyway you get the picture. Besides just what is Rush going to bring to the football table besides his divisiveness. Is he really going to be able to tell Tom Jackson, Sterling Sharpe and the rest of the ESPN commentators something they don't know about football? Heck, is he going to be able to draw on his vast football knowledge to tell even me or most of the very knowledgable women Browns Backers anything we don't already know to say nothing of Cleveland Mike? Is there anyone who is going to tune in to hear Rush's football expertise, I don't think so. People, if they do tune in, will be waiting to hear him insult some segment of the audience or make some stupid reference to liberals, George Bush or even Bill Clinton. This is NOT what football needs. Wasn't Dennis Miller bad enough?? Of course if you disagree with me please feel free to drop me a note and unlike Rush's show I'll put it in the next update. In the meantime you can bet the one pregame show I WON'T be watching will be ESPN's until he is gone. There I feel better now."

I don't want these pundit/comedians on during the game as Miller was - am willing to see how Rush does because they are at least smart enough to be doing it pre-game.
