Nineteen years ago, it was obvious that the NEA would go from bad to worse. Their membership has increased greatly by including cafeteria workers, janitors, etc. And their budget for political mischief has grown enormously.
==================================
All, Is this a tax "free" organization???? In politics????? Peace and love, George.

Guys, more of the unadulterated EVIL that has become present day education. And, the social-ization of YOUR children is deliberate and malicious. Peace and love, George.

The teachers unions have been a huge part of the liberalcause thru their large funding and their campaign workers.

I believe this is one of the biggest threats we face in our country. The indoctrination of children with their left wing ideology and the graduation of too many kids who can't read or write.

Too bad the pols are scared to death to take them on. We need competition by NON-union workers/teachers.

I think we conservatives are overdue for declaring "war" on the NEA. We have witnessed the decline of our schools and the decimation of the curricula that was dedicated to teaching children the skills and knowledge that would help them succeed. We are seeing the results of over 40 years of sitting on our hands and letting them destroy the most important institution we have; our schools. The time has come to bring it to a close. As the NEA brings it attack dogs to bear on conservatives and conservative values, we should should loose ours on their leftist dogma. TAKE BACK THE SCHOOLS!!!!

The NEA has targeted Republicans in every election for many years. I dare say their failures have well outnumbered their successes. Let them throw their money away. I have no proof other than knowing alot of teachers (my brother is a teacher and I sit on our local school board) but the majority of teachers I know (the vast majority) pay their union dues (because they have to) and vote Republican. That is why they have few electoral victories, they don't have the rank and file united behind them.

I remember being a teacher and hearing dedicated NaziEA members talk about 'starting little revolutions' inside their classrooms. They talked of ignoring any state and national standards and just closing the door when administrators tried to monitor their teaching.

I'm not sure what to do about our educational situation, but it needs to be mucked out. US educational policy currently puts us on a fast track to a Darwin Award.

the NEA was determined to become a powerful political machine rather than merely an organization of teachers devoted to improving education

Bingo. Its ultimately all about jobs. More "educational" programs equals bigger budgets equals more teachers, administrators, etc.

It amazes me anyone is afraid of the NEA. If I ran for office, I'd run against them, not from them.

There is no way they can possibly defend their record.

When are republicans going to grow some balls and take away their non-profit status?? Organizations like this and JJ's PUSH are nothing but political machines for the democrats. The republicans are so afraid of being called kid-killers and racists by the press that they do nothing. By the way have you boycotted your local liberal newspaper? Do something people, quit the talk and start to walk.

There was an interesting and somewhat related thread posted today discussing "public" vs. "private" matters, Here's my post from that thread.:

This is exactly why I'm starting to believe that "public" schools are built on an inherently flawed premise. These institutions can never be truly "public".

Children have not fully formed the ability to analyze the merits of competing ideas and will always need some guidance and protection from subjects they are just not developmentally prepared to discuss. Therefore, the school and society must decide what beliefs are "acceptable" and, in doing so, are taking on the character of a private institution where speech can be constrained. Trying to combine the public sphere of freedom of speech and religious expression with the many individual private ideas concerning morality has created a hybrid institution which serves neither the public nor private interests.

This hybrid nature of public schools, being neither truly public nor private is sole reason why there are so many debates about prayer, discipline, sex education, and other ideas in schools. The shame of it is that all taxpayers, no matter which side of the debate they are on, are being forced to pay for the teaching of some ideals which they do not support.

From an equal protection argument, there is not a non-profit organization in this country who cannot violate IRS laws in bold, in your face fashion based on the NEA and it's actions which go unquestioned by those tasked with questioning.

Yes, there is such a thing as a non-union teacher. They all work at private schools.

Most of them are. Take a look at some of the form 990's on guidestar for "non-profit" organizations like International Action Centerand other "peace" groups, Evironmental Groups, Islamic Groups, etc. IMO these so-called "non-profits" consistently violate their non-profit status by attempting to influence elections.
