Hmmmm, an evolutionary pinnacle that doesn't reproduce. That's going to take some figgering out. Easy. If they've reached the pinnacle, that means there's no further evolving to be done. If they reproduced, they'd still be evolving, and so haven't reached the pinnacle.
Sounds about right.
