California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante yesterday told voters he would raise taxes and fees by $8 billion if he becomes governor in October's recall vote.

In an address titled "Tough Love for California," Mr. Bustamante called for the new taxes, combined with $4.5 billion in spending cuts, to help alleviate a record $38 billion budget deficit, which voters blame largely on Gov. Gray Davis.

Brit Hume said Abbas was staging phony attacks on PA terrorists.

Bustamante expects us to believe he wasn't party to the Davis debacle.

Sorry, WFW is more convincing.

Why is "tough love" from the government always stuff that hurts the tax-payers as opposed to stuff that hurts the tax-takers...?

"The folks at the top have to pay their fair share," Mr. Bustamante said on the lawn of his suburban Sacramento home. "The folks at the bottom have to pay something and the people being squeezed in the middle need some relief from the car tax and college fees.

So... what about cutting some of the social programs that got us into this mess?

This "tough love" rhetoric is a load of horse manure.

I'm sixteen years old, and even I'm smart enough to figure out that the last thing you want to do is tax the hell out of the wealthy and the businesses. It's what got us into this mess, and it's not going to get us out of it.

Bustamante is insulting his own intelligence with this "plan".

Bustamante vs one Republican = two opposing forces

Bustamante vs two or three Republicans = one coalition

California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante yesterday told voters he would raise taxes and fees by $8 billion if he becomes governor in October's recall vote.

And just cost himself the election. Hello, Walter Mondale, Jr.!

Anyone know what Cruz's support numbers are like in the black community, given his little accidental slip a couple years back that revealed how he prefers to refer to them?

I wonder if Arnold could split the Dem vote with Bustamante and give the Republican vote to McClintock? If Bustamante keeps this up, that would seem increasingly plausible.

I wonder if Arnold could split the Dem vote...

That would be nice, but I'm assuming that Cruz will be the Dem nominee.

Davis signs a homosexual rights bill, and Bustamante immediately tries it out.

I gotta tellya, I thought Bustamante looked like a rational being on TV last night. He made a great deal of seeming sense, for a Democrat. It was an extremely well-crafted appearance. I was floored.

So far, my fellow freepers, this guy looks better to me than Arnold. Never underestimate sweetness and reason. Even if the sweetness if fake, and there ain't a reasonable bone in his secessionist body.

Sure the guy's a pantload of buffalo chips, but the "Tough Love" thing is downright brilliant. It might even cause people to forget that he wants California safely back in the bosom of Mexico. He has numerous electoral advantages as an incumbent, too. But there's danger for Buister. Garamendi and he will have to split the volatile dead, fictitious and illegal Mexican vote, allowing a Republican to sneak in with the votes of live taxpayers.

THe minute I left California, I knew there'd be trouble.
