From CNN.com:Sergio Vieira de Mello was among the many wounded in the blast and evacuated from the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard said in New York. (Map) "He has been injured, but we're not certain how badly. He appears to be conscious; they are giving him water," Eckhard said. "Dozens appear to be injured -- there are so far no reports of deaths."
I hope this means the report I heard of his death was erroneous.

Maybe someone actually figured out that a collective group of US haters would have a better chance at doing damage than several small, regionalized factions. Add some funding to it, and you'd have AQv.2. After the fall of AQ, it just seems naturally that some looney would want to take the place of Bin Laden. On the one hand, it's bad, because a lot more of our people over there are going to be killed/wounded. On the other hand, it's a blessing, as the more they get together, the more chances we have of finishing them off, since they'll make larger targets. It's hard to fight very small groups that blend into the population, but if they do get together, will be much harder for them to hide and move around. People will notice them, and most Iraqis and others over there could always use some reward money.

CNN reporting President Bush cutting golf game short and returning to the ranch. This is worrisome to me that we had people inside...

FN: Major Bob:
"It speaks to the desperation of the attackers."
What the nutcase terrorist was probably thinking, "If you get involved in assisting the US with its illegal operation of Iraq, we are going to attack you."
"There are a number of devices in the market right now (capable) of stopping that vehicle." Was preventable.
"The message to everyone inside Iraq - security should be your (priority)".
What now: 1) Provide security so nothing else happens. 2) Get the folks out - which can take hours.
John Scott says the Arab media is "playing it straight" - not assigning blame.

I read a post from happygal a couple months ago, stating that Mad Ivan has a new job that leaves him almost no time for freeping. Thank you for the info, I was wondering where he disappeared too.

Understood - but I bet if you asked those guys off-camera, they'd say the same thing. Dying to protect America is one thing, dying in an backwards Islamo-Arab cesspool trying to save your enemies is another.

I hope he's just leaving the golf course because the press would make something of it that he was vacationing while this was happening.

10:30 a.m. Eastern Time Tuesday/Update:
A troubling, graphic video here from Baghdad (if you have Windows Media and can stream at 300k or 56k). Cut and paste and view:

Just taken from Japanese TV taken from it appears CBS TV. Camera crew right inside the building right after the explosion with the bloody wounded streaming out.

I hope so, too.
Could this day possibly change the hearts and minds of a few UN workers? Our troops are so decent.
