Two Taleban Attacks in Afghanistan Kill 25 People
VOA News 18 Aug 2003, 18:44 UTC
Two hundred Taleban fighters in Afghanistan have overrun a second police compound near the Pakistan border, hours after a similar assault in the same area left 22 people dead.
Authorities say three Afghan soldiers died and four others were captured during the raid late Sunday on a police compound in southeastern Paktika province.
In the first attack early Sunday, authorities say at least 15 suspected Taleban guerrillas and seven policemen were killed when an estimated 400 rocket-armed guerrillas stormed a police compound in the Paktika town of Barmal.
Meanwhile, German officials say the German development agency office in Kabul was robbed at gunpoint Monday.
The officials (in Berlin) say one of the workers was injured and $132,000 was taken in the attack. No arrests have been reported.
Last week, more than 60 people were killed in three separate attacks. That prompted the United Nations to impose temporary restrictions on relief operations and travel in parts of the region.
The latest violence comes as provincial governments make security preparations for celebrations Tuesday marking Afghan Independence Day, the end of British rule in 1919. Security is reported tight throughout Afghanistan's southern provinces, the scene of the recent wave of attacks.
The Associated Press reports hundreds of additional uniformed police are patrolling southern provinces, along with plainclothes police and intelligence agents.
Reports from the region say some of the new violence may be linked to new government efforts to rein in warlords who have private armies. Some of those warlords also hold posts in the U.S.-backed Kabul government.

I think it is time for our foreign policy spin doctors to force Pakistan to be responsible.

Our leaders made that same mistake in Vietnam.
The Rhodesians also made that same mistake until the later part of the 1970's.
Our military should be allowed to take the fight in Pakistan

You are so right. I was there Jan on an assessment trip of some things we support. Lived there as a kid. People are beautiful and so is the country. The 'scum' have really killed the spirit of the people.

The Jihadist scum need dealt with in severe ways by our leaders.
Look at what they done to that Serb farmer in Kosovo today.
They shot him in the mouth.
Our leaders have been too kind to these Islamists.
To: taxed2death
You are correct.
Our tax dollars also built the KLA narco-terrorist gangsters in Kosovo into a para-state fighting group.
Our tax dollars are still at work helping kep Kosovo in the hands of the KLA gangsters.

Either be responsible or step aside.

You are correct.
We need to adopt the tough tactics that the Russians use in Chechnya.
You have to be brutal with psychos.

Every version I've seen of this story has the same B.S. spin. "Attacks Kill 22." Bull! The attackers killed 7 and lost 15 of their own in the process! That's different!

They have been too kind to them. We are coddling the Saudi's and we are acting like Mushareff is the most wonderful leader around and is our friend. Right. Our 'leaders' won't even call a guy like Tom Daschle a socialist when he wants to give $ to the kids of families that don't pay income tax because all the rich people are getting a per child tax credit. Why should we expect them to go after these foreign scum.
Here I am being critical and have no idea how complex these matters are and the pressures GW and his team is under. I just know I need to pray for them.
