Chaos and cannibalism under Congo's bloody skies
Guardian ^

Posted on 08/16/2003 8:52:05 PM PDT by BlackJack

'The soldiers had red eyes, and they were singing and dancing. They slaughtered the priest, cut him to pieces, removed his heart and liver and cooked them. The rest of the group had to pay money or eat the human flesh to be allowed to leave. Another four men, three women and three children were killed.' Among the dead was a pregnant woman who was gutted.

In Congo for the past 50 years tales of cannibalism have been apocryphal. Today they are a norm - what better way to sow terror into the hearts of your enemies than to instil the fear that they could be eaten?

Lots of bullshit and cultural relativity on this thread. Slavery is not nor ever was comparable to cannibalism which has historically been eschewed by more advanced societies for far longer thn slavery has been.

I lived in Africa....Sierra Leone to be exact...and Haiti which is sort of an African microcosm in our midst.

The road to recovery for those places (maybe it's not really recovery but catch-up) is long if not impossible. That does not mean that one should not hope or lend a hand in hopeless situations but the reality is that many many folks in Africa are going to die in the next 50 years from disease, war, and famine and there is little we can do to change that short of re-colonization and I'm not even sure that would work.

All cultures are not equal nor on level playing fields and these Pollyanna fools running around espousing such platitudes either have no real world experience or simply cannot swallow when reality crushes their self serving idealism.

"This is not cannibalism. This is animal friendly meat eating...."

When's "PETA" going to protest this?

Why don't you practice what you preach when it come's to leaving the insults out of a debate? I've seen this tactic used over and over by liberals but they are unable to recognize this flaw due to huge ego's! Sounds like you have been afflicted with this same disease!

Gee, in your last 3 posts you've insulted France, Canada, Muslims, Arabs, and Peta - all with members or citizens who are life forms higher on the food chain than the dreg I was responding to. And you think I have no manners? Look in the mirror before you cast the first stone.

Aren't the continuous sophmoric insults typical of a lower-intelligence highschooler?

Big time. I have actually become convinced that Crazy_Liberal is in fact a Democrat Underground disruptor intent on breeding division.

"By 2050 there will be more Chinese settlers in Africa than Africans, and by 2100 there will be no Africans at all in Africa."

Au contraire, the invading Chinese will form an important part of the tres chic nouvelle African cuisine: Chinese take-in.

Of course you would defend PETA.

A Good Democrat Underground Disruptor would need to defend PETA.

Then this person is really really really stupid (just like the rats)! I have never seen any kind of division among Freeper's when liberals show up on Free Republic spewing there intolerable venom! Besides, isn't it fun going head to head with these low lifes?

It goes to show how utterly moronic you really are when I posted only once on this particular post! Typical for liberals to not practice what they preach!!!!

She's been subtle, I'll give her that. But look at her tag line, even: A praise for Ronald Reagan, but a comment that if he cannot do it, no one can. Well, unfortunately, due to his poor health, he can't do it.

Just about everything she says exudes a subtle slam at conservatism.

But the dead giveaway is her penchant for coming on the forum and slinging insults with very little provocation. This is disruptive behavior.

Besides, isn't it fun going head to head with these low lifes?

Not especially. I view FR as the ONE place I can go to be rid of these vermin.

"life forms higher on the food chain than the dreg I was responding to." I believe that I am the "dreg" that you were responding to. You are a very rude person with very limited thought processes. You also seem to have a penchant for cannabalism. I still think that you are at the wrong site.

She's about as subtle as a white person at the Soul Train Awards. What's even more pathetic than a person who think's they are clever enough to fool others....I almost pity this poor soul.

My prediction is that the Chinese are going to slowly begin "aiding" Africa. By 2050 there will be more Chinese settlers in Africa than Africans, and by 2100 there will be no Africans at all in Africa.

Perhaps. Some of the only open-land areas remaining are Africa, Northeastern Russia, Canada, and South America. We've already seen the interest China has in Northeastern Russia and South America. Africa would be a no-brainer.

Problem is, by 2050 this will be a different world. Land grabs won't be as possible.

it is easily a difficult topic ... deciding if you are commenting for real or tongue in cheek.

We have every right to discern for ourselves what our position is in regard to acts of other peoples ... and cultures. True, they can do whatever is the norm within their culture; however, it does not mean we agree with it or find it acceptable behavior. Why did we intervine in Bosnia, etc? I do not want to support with money,, or other means such acts as this article sights.

It is a choice. Be discerning.
