The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Thursday said that a massive power outage that hit New York City and other East Coast cities was not caused by a terror attack.
Power outages were reported in the New York metropolitan area and Detroit, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa, witnesses said.
The outage was caused by an outage at a Manhattan power plant which destabilized the power grid as far as Canada, FERC spokesman Bryan Lee said.
"We have no indication that there is any terrorism involved," Lee said.

Buffalo has outages too. Probably at the Niagara Falls (NY or Ontario) plant was the first to go offline. That was where the 1965 outage propogated from. That one had a squirrel shorting out one of those massive transformers.
My sister in Buffalo said it was brutally hot and humid today.

Someone on 17th Street and Third Avenue ran the toaster oven while blow-drying their hair. It's obvious.

"the contract between citizens and government "
You may want to check the fine print. Batteries are not included. Some assembly is required.
ROTFL! Good one!

***If the American government has failed to prevent a simple power outage (not related to
terrorist activity), then they have violated the contract between citizens and government.****
What this shows is that YOU have no concept of how the power systems and grids work in this country. The government cannot prevent a loss of power. There are many things that can trip off a unit that no one has control over. Trip circuits are designed to protect the unit or a part of the electrical grid in question. If a plant trips off line it may destabilize the grid in an area causing other plants to trip off also. Government rules and regulations have NOTHING to do with it!
Perhaps you need a course in POWER PLANT operations before you open your tater trap again and spout off on something you are obviously IGNORANT and dumb as a post about.

Why, with a major power outage, is the current government not being held responsible?

Private industry generates power.

The Bush administration has proposed a national energy plan however, the liberals, democrat politicans, tree huggers, enviornmentalists, green peace whiners, all believe in the ism values. What is ism?? liberalism, Socialism, and communism. the difference between the three. Communism is at the end of a gun.

Our local heating and air conditioning installer bid it as part of our house project. Check them out at www.waterfurnace.com
This unit also provides radiant heat in our lower level floor which is tile and we can turn up the heat in various rooms. Its not cheap to buy, but I'm sold on what it does. I don't know what the payout (how many years it takes to recoup the additional cost)...I would guess I'm saving at least $80/month over a traditional AC unit. btw, the thing looks like a big white refrigerator parked in our furnace room.

Because it's neither their duty, nor their responsibility to protect us from electro-mechanical failures?
You want to see how well government run utilities work, check out Cuba, North Korea, or any number of other garden spots that have such things.

I thought Reuters was not using the term terrorist. Shouldn't the headline say blackouts not freedom fighter related?

see post 40. that should be 153 dollars per month.
pay out on 30 years is reasonable payback on 12000 dollars to drill four wells.

You are correct, but remember what happened to Long Island Lighting when they tried to build one. They were crucified by the dipsh*t greens, Luddites and that crowd.

I avoid the airports. I don't tolerate it. I opposed and STILL oppose the STUPID unPatriot Act.
I don't count on the feds to protect me. They are unable to do so. I don't care if George Washington was still president. It doesnt' change a thing.
I protect myself. I have my gun. I have my wits, and most importantly, I have the safety that's between my ears.
