... [Margaret Carlson] unintentionally summed up the feminist view of the 42nd presidency: We all have a little Clinton in us. Hope springs eternal, dear.

Mark Steyn is always a joy to read.

And that favours the California Republicans, assuming they can put their long-held death-wish on hold long enough to get behind the most plausible mass-appeal change candidate: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Whats happened is that for once a major election has slipped its moorings. Its beyond the management of the parties. [...] In a two-man race, destroying the other guy works for you by default. In a hundred-man race, destroying one big-name Republican might just make some other big-name Republican the beneficiary, and solidify what would otherwise have been a split vote. [...] You would think Ms Carlson and all the other high-minded disdainers of our mean-spirited politics would welcome a chance to try something different. [...] Davis himself called the recall an insult to those who voted for him. Hes right: it is an insult to them, and they deserve it. Brilliant, as always...
To: Pokey78
Interesting to have confirmed my gut feeling that Bustamante is far from brilliant. He has decent numbers now because he encapsulates the pro-Davis vote, which means the pro-Davis vote is at about 17% of the total now. That's embarassingly bad, even worse than the polls say.
This is Mark Steyn's usual great job, except I'm a bit surprised he's not aware that the election is now closed, so the Democrats can no longer put a big name on the ballot. That's over and done with.

RUNNING MAN Al StewartBefore the phone hits the receiver
You're halfway to the door
The voice said "Get out while you can,
There's just 1O minutes, nothing more"
Time only for the essentials
Better gather them and run---
The false name inside the passport,
The gold bars and the gun
And once again they've come out of the past
And though your mind is cool your heart is beating fast
You've been through it all before
Each time you wish a little more that you could ask
"What do you want from me?
What do you need from me?
There's no rest for the running man
Why can't you let him be?"
It's a long and twisting journey
From the sweeping northern plains
To the outcrops of the jungle
Bowed beneath the tropic rains.
In the customs hall, the officer
Takes you to one side
And his eyes reveal no feeling
As you hand over the bribe
And once again you've bought a little time
And once again you're fading out of sight
Still the fox is growing older
As he calls over his shoulder to the night:
"What do you want from me?
What do you need from me?
There's no rest for the running man
Why can't you let him be?"
Here ... come over here
Beneath a sympathetic moon
We'll sit and talk over old times without a fear,
Another beer from the cafes of the night
The tumbling rhythms of guitars ring loud and clear.
One by one they've nailed the others
But you always got away;
What it is that keeps you just that step ahead
No one can say.
In one last raid the agents
Of the dawn break down the door
Of a house where you were standing
Maybe just an hour before. And still the thread continues to unwind.
You take the hidden roads that only you can find.
And should they come upon your tracks,
There's just a question hanging back you left behind:
"What do you want from me?
What do you need from me?
There's no rest for the running man,
Why can't you let him be?"
"What do you want from me?
What do you need from me?"

Thanks.
Arianna Huffington is trying to "smear" Arnold, by calling him a "Bush Republican".
===
"She also sought to link Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, who polls show is leading the race to replace the Democratic governor, with President Bush, whose favorability ratings have recently declined in California.
"Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Bush Republican," she said. "And basically, it is laughable for Bush Republicans in this campaign to be attacking Gray Davis for fiscal irresponsibility while turning a blind eye to the orgy of fiscal irresponsibility going on in Washington."

It is laughable for Arianna Huffington to talk about the evil rich while she pays NO state taxes and precious little federal tax.
Someone should ask her how much she pays her accontants.
Seems to me Arianna is being used by the Rats to attack Arnold. Anyone who is friends with Al Franken is not to be trusted.
To: Pokey78
"On the other hand, it seems completely pointless to go through all the turmoil of Californias gubernatorial recall just to install the discredited governors third-rate deputy."
---
This about sums it up.
Davis must pay.
Cruz must lose.
And the only way to do it: Arnie must win.
A vote for anyone else, except Arnold, is a vote for Cruz.
To: Miss Marple
I have also heard that George Soros is supporting her candidacy.....Soros...Franken...maher.
To: Pokey78
Oh, come on. If thats a new low in our politics, you need to get out more. True, its not the funniest line in the world. Its not as funny as Margarets a couple of years back, when she unintentionally summed up the feminist view of the 42nd presidency: We all have a little Clinton in us. Hope springs eternal, dear. Thank you for posting this! There are so many gems in the way he turns a phrase, it's hard to select just one!

He remains the only governor to keep a journal for every day of his entire term...
Except for Bob Graham, when he was in the Florida governor's office...

If a person votes no on the recall, do they still get to vote on the second part of the ballot?
