Five Killed When Bridge Blown Up in India 9 minutes ago
NEW DELHI, India - Suspected separatist rebels blew up a bridge on the main highway in India's northeast Thursday, killing five civilians traveling on a bus, news reports said.
The attack came a day before India celebrates its national independence.
At least 11 separatist groups have called for a strike during the celebrations marking India's independence from Britain in 1947. The rebels asked citizens of the region to boycott all government functions and to refrain from any celebrations.
The rebels oppose Indian sovereignty in the region and accuse New Delhi of exploiting the rich natural resources of the oil- and mineral-rich northeast.
Three men and two women were killed, and 15 other people were wounded, the Press Trust of India (news - web sites) news agency reported.

IMPHAL: Militants in Manipur, who have called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations, on Thursday exploded a powerful bomb on a bridge in Imphal West district killing five bus passengers and injuring 15 others.
The militants exploded the remote controlled device on Lilong Bridge around 5 am when a bus coming from Chandel district was passing through it, official sources said.
Splinters of the bomb ripped through the bus killing three passengers on the spot and injuring 17 others. Two of them succumbed on way to hospital. Most victims were small time traders, the sources said.
The bridge and the road leading to it were partially damaged in the blast.
The militants escaped after the blast, the sources said, adding no organisation had claimed responsibility for the blast.
A massive combing operation has been launched in the area where tight security measures were already in place in view of the boycott call by militants and threats of missile attacks and bomb blasts.
Nine militant outfits of the North-Eastern states, including Manipur People's Liberation Front, have called for boycott of Independence day celebrations.
