PRESS RELEASE: 8/13/03, 4:16 PM
SUBJECT: FOX-Sleaze vs. FOX-News : Conservatives Must Decide!
The Catholic Family Association of America (CFAA) issued a call to moral conservatives to fight the scheduled mainstreaming of pornography by Fox Broadcasting by hitting Rupert Murdoch where they have the most influence, the ad revenues of FOX-News.
In an article called The Music Man, appearing on the CFAA web site, president Timothy A. Chichester denounced the pending introduction of "Skin", a show designed to mainstream pornography under the guise of a Romeo and Juliet romance between a "good" pornographer's daughter and a "bad" LA district attorney's son.
Chichester blasted Jim Leonard, creator and executive producer of the program, who boasted that "We have a working porn director who is a technical adviser for us", for attempting to mainstream the ideas that the porn industry is a legitimate business and the walking cess-pool sludge who run it are really not just plain folk, but better than those that oppose them.
Citing Fox owner Murdoch as one who also thinks we really need a show that "glorifies and promotes the smut industry that has devastated more lives than we can ever imagine, while it undermines the very concept of moral self-control," the article goes on to observe: "Murdoch happily rakes in the cash from both sides of the cultural divide. In one hand he holds FOX-Sleaze and the other FOX-News. The first caters to the social liberals based on the proposition that the deeper the TV dumpster the bigger the bottom-feeder bucks to be hauled up. FOX-News caters to those who seek refuge from the nauseating reek of the pit. Wow, what a market straddle! What a two-headed money machine."
CFAA is asking that viewers let Murdoch know what they think of his attempts to use their minds "as his personal sewerage filtration plant" by turning off FOX-News for three days a week until Murdoch cancels "Skin".

The Music Man FOX-Sleaze vs. FOX-News : Conservatives Must Decide!
The much touted new Fox network drama "Skin" is a show designed to mainstream pornography under the guise of a Romeo and Juliet romance between a "good" pornographer's daughter and a "bad" LA district attorney's son.
Does Jim Leonard, creator and executive producer of this cultural assault, really think that promoting pornography to his fifteen year-old daughter and thirteen year-old son is in their best interest? Apparently so. It makes one think of the Music Man. Only Leonard, our high-stepping trombone player, is leading the parade into the cultural slime that rots the heart and makes civility impossible. "We have a working porn director who is a technical adviser for us" boasted Leonard to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Perhaps he will "do" a cameo with his daughter on screen, as a way of further desensitizing those still shielded by the moral restraints embedded in the nation's Christian roots; or maybe even one with his son, working to free us of several of our ugly little religious taboos in a single "adult moment". After all, for Mr. Leonard, is that not the idea? To be on the leading edge of societal engineering is one thing, but to be paid for it, ah, that is quite something else. It ought to more than cover his children's bills for sexually transmitted diseases, abortions, abuse and psychiatrists as they follow the path pioneered by good old dad.
Rupert Murdoch, the grand poobah of Fox, also must think we really need a show that glorifies and promotes the smut industry that has devastated more lives than we can ever imagine, while it undermines the very concept of moral self-control. Murdoch happily rakes the cash in from both sides of the cultural divide. What a two-headed money machine.
But Murdoch has forgotten Von Clauswitz' treatise On War and the nature of vulnerability. Decent folk who constitute the bulk of FOX-News viewers will have no direct influence over FOX-Sleaze. But they do have significant influence over FOX-News.
I propose that starting August 18th, those who watch FOX-News turn OFF the network for three full days a week until Murdoch cancels "Skin", including the two weeks following the cancellation to seal the deal.
The intent is to soak up ad revenue well beyond that which FOX-Sleaze will generate from "Skin". The viewers will survive the disconnect. They will exert their influence on Rupert Murdoch's empire of sleaze and no damage will come to their favorite conservative programs. Conservative viewers have to recognize that as conservative as the shows may be, they are, as Limbaugh points out, entertainment first. If they will not deny themselves their conservative feel-good shows for a few days, they are not as tough as they think. What they should keep in mind is that while depriving FOX-News of revenue, the mega-buck celebrities will suffer nothing but the satisfying revelation that many of their viewers actually do put principle before gain. The target is Murdoch; the revenue is his.
The second part is to let Murdoch know what they think of his repeated attempts to use their minds as his personal sewerage filtration plant. Ideally, they will tell him they want not just "Skin" axed, but also the rest of the FOX-Sleaze sewer roto-rootered.

I don't watch Fox TV. They're nothing but sleaze and "reality" TV shows. I've had it with reality TV shows.

I do like Bernie Mac and Malcolm in the Middle. Most Fox shows aren't worth watching, however.

Conservatives are disgusted by Fox TV yet watch Fox News more than any other news outlet.
If those same conservatives would voluntarily turn off Fox News a couple days per week, maybe the conservative base of Fox News viewers could bring pressure to bear on Murdock to clean up the other half of his empire, Fox TV.
Fox TV does not reflect the values of the average viwer of Fox News. This is a chance to influence that programming.

I'm a big fan of the Romeo and Juliet story, especially since the movie version with Claire Danes came out. I'm rather interested in what Fox is going to do with the story. I'll watch this version if it comes out.

I don't see how not watching FOXNEWS is going to influence anything regarding FOX TV.
If lots of folks just don't watch the show in question, it will die. I don't believe I've ever seen anything on regular FOX except NFL Football and King of The Hill when it was a new show.

Oh good, so you guys want to destroy FOXNews so all we'll end up with is CNN. Yeah, that'll work.

It's called smart diversification. Fox News taps into right-wing markets, Fox TV gets younger, apolitical viewers. More eyeballs for the marketers = more $$$ for Murdoch.
Fox News is just entertainment. Wasn't Geraldo the tip-off?

I don't see how not watching FOXNEWS is going to influence anything regarding FOX TV. If Fox News knows they are losing viewership due to sleaze programming within their corporate structure at Fox TV, how can it not?

Murdoch hasn't forgotten anything. People misunderstand why Fox News is conservative. While Murdoch is conservative in business he is purely profit oriented. It's not a reflection of Murdoch's views, it's capturing a market hole he saw. Fox the entertainment channel is sleazy because there's good market in that. If Murdoch saw good numbers in clean entertainment he'd be going for it, if suddenly the other news channels went right he'd head left with his. Murdoch doesn't mix business and philosophy.

so you guys want to destroy FOXNews Hardly! But its not a bad idea to send a message to Fox News that their conservative base is disgusted by their corporate promotion of the pornography culture with this new program!

Thanks for the heads up, sounds like an interesting new show. Fox has come out with a couple of good dramas in the last several years. I'm waiting for the return of 'The Shield'.

Somehow, I don't think Fox News and the regular FOX network are programmed by the same people. They don't even draw the same ratings revenues, as far as I know.
Boycotting the non-cable network, I don't have a problem with (I don't watch it anyway), but since Fox Sports Net (yet another member of the FOX network family) has the contract for about half of the Cards games, I'm afraid I'll just have to write a letter.
To: Polycarp
When the POPE openly apologizes to all of the victims of sexual predator priests and bishops over the years, and removes ALL of these criminals from the ranks of the Church, then I'll switch off Fox News. Until then, Catholics shouldn't be throwing rocks in their own glass houses.
