Gov. Gray Davis on Tuesday said he supports an effort by Assembly Democrats to raise personal income taxes and undo the vehicle license fee increase.

Lawmakers are crafting legislation that would wipe out the tripling of the car fee that is to go into effect Oct. 1. Instead, the bill would add two new top income tax brackets and bump up taxes on cigarettes.

That new car tax wont exist in another 6 months. It was implemented illegally and will soon become history.

This is the first time I've almost posted something that would give me a time-out for inappropriate language. Can't this guy be gone yesterday? And if they try and pull that "oops, Gray's resigned, we need the courts to fix this mess" stuff, watch out.

"The constitution itself says that there is a two-thirds vote requirement if you are raising taxes for the purpose of raising revenues," said Steinberg, D-Sacramento. "That's the key phrase."

Setting aside the semantic argument that the word "raising" can mean "collecting" rather than increasing, Steinberg is essentially stating that a sitting governor can raise taxes by fiat, with a simple majority of support from the legislature.

Davis increased fees on his own. Now, he wants to eliminate those fees and replace the supposed revenue with a tax increase. The Dems say this process is not raising taxes. They are lying, filthy scum.

"If we can find a legal way to reduce the car tax while raising the taxes that I proposed in my budget in January, I would support it," Davis said."

So now it's a Car TAX, but when he illegally raised it without the required 2/3 vote it was a FEE. Doofus makes my governor (Paul Patton) look like a saint in comparison.

If they are raising anyone's taxes, and that is what a swap is, raising taxes on some and reducing it on others, then they need the super majority to pass it.

He should do the former. He'll be less full of it. He's already blind, so he can't do the latter. There. Being an executive decision-maker isn't that hard!

October is going to be great! Watching him swing from his political rope will be too much fun. I can see him running from reporters now, going down in complete disgrace and dishonor.......

"I do not think it's fair that ordinary Californians bear the full burden of the budget crisis."

I guess he wants the tax burden to fall on the extraordinary Californians. WTF is he talking about?!

Movie reference; "Escape from New York". Ironically, I am initially going to New York. I will be staying briefly with relatives there until I find computer-support work and some digs in Virginia or one of the Carolinas.

Look for me between here and there driving my truck bearing a sign that says, "Don't shoot, I'm a Freeper!"

Norm-As it gets closer to the election and if it still looks like Davis is toast I think there is a good chance he will resign. Particularly if it looks like a Republican is going to get in. That way Cruz can run as the acting governor. Davis will be getting phone calls from the higher ups in the Democratic party making him an offer he cannot refuse.
