HOW I FIXED MSBLAST
dfu | 8-12-03 | dfu

Posted on 08/12/2003 8:03:57 PM PDT by doug from upland

I recently got DSL and and with a brand new notebook, I got hit yesterday with MSBLAST before I could even dowload the Microsoft patch.

That presented quite a problem, especially because I am not a computer tecno geek. One of the main problems is that the virus keeps knocking you off the internet before you can get to the Microsoft patch to download it.

Here is a solution that worked for me. I called by dialup ISP and asked them if they could download the patch and burn it on a CD for me. They did that immediately, I went to their office about 10 minutes away, and in 10 minutes they fixed it for me. I hope this can help some of you if you've been hit.

Bump.

An obvious solution, but in an era where people will spend 30 minutes looking around a living room for a remote control instead of walking over to a TV and pressing buttons in person, sometimes the obvious needs to be stated.

Macintosh users are finding it hard to resist the urge to be smug tonight.

Even if you dont want to replace your Intel-based hardware, go out and buy SuSE Linux and avoid the Microsoft nightmare.

Oh give me a break. I was protected weeks prior to this by the Microsoft patch, and several hours before it hit by my Antivirus update. Those who did get hit, much as I felt for them, got hit because they failed to protect themselves... We all get one before we learn to be vigilant about security.

If you use a system that is remotely popular, some schmuck will find a way to vandalize it.

Must be nice....

I had to filter several destination ports on udp and tcp on 127 routers and 10 layer 3 routing switches. fun stuff.

I feel sorry for the help desk guys who were on the phone ALL DAY talking to pissed off people.

I heard about the worm before it was considered too much of a threat - installed the patch over the weekend, and never did get hit... of course, maybe the personal firewall helps, too...

I don't understand what's so hard about subscribing to a anti-virus information newsletter, and updating as fixes come out - proactive sure beats reactive...

The last version of Swindows I had was 3.1 which I ran up until late last year. Contrary to the lies I could still do most of the internet unless some java jocky did something fancy, and basically useless, to spruce up a website.

After buying a used Mac G3, I can report that Netscape works fine and the combo has locked up requiring a reboot maybe three times in about a year.

As for a virus, well I'm not smug about it, but that just one of the features of using an OS that's a target for all of hackerdom.

About the only way Gates is going to get a buck out of me is if he personally beats out the other homeless to clean my windshield.

"If you use a system that is remotely popular, some schmuck will find a way to vandalize it"

"remotely popular" is the key phrase - no one attacking systems cares about the Mac and Linux users, they are too few and far between. The smuggies wallow in mediocrity.

Microsoft automatically updated my system with the patch several weeks ago. That, my personal firewall and up to date antivirus software keep my system humming.

You wrote: "Please tell me more about SuSE Linux."

I've used SuSE Linux for about five years and have always been pleased with the product. Even if you're used to Microsoft applications, the Linux applications these days are "good enough" for most users... plus the vast majority of them are free.

The downside with any version of Linux is that you'll have to climb the learning curve. If you have time, it is well worth it... if not, you'll become terribly frustrated.

Nightmare? Never had a problem here. Maybe its my Win2k NTFS OS. Most of the time it is the user. Maybe Suse is better suited for beginners?
