E-Vote Machines Face Audit

After weeks of defending itself against charges of bad programming and lax security, Diebold Election Systems is facing an independent, third-party audit of the software for its touch-screen voting machines.

Maryland Gov. Robert L. Erhlich Jr. ordered the review after researchers at Johns Hopkins University and Rice University released a report (PDF) last month revealing numerous programming flaws and security vulnerabilities in the source code for Diebold's AccuVote-TS voting machines.

Diebold. These are the same folks that make ATM machines. I bet the banks make JOLLY sure that these are quadruple quality checked.

Good to see that a Republican governor is on the ball. Hopefully the audit will be a thorough one, and not a sham to make it look like the software was tested.

It really doesn't matter if the code is audited. If this balloting system has no provision for a reviewable paper ballot to be produced at the time of casting the vote, it needs to be discarded, and a new system that does be implemented.
