WEBSTER, N.Y. - Two people were shot, one fatally, Tuesday morning in an apparent robbery of the credit union at a sprawling Xerox complex, authorities said.
Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said one victim died and the second was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with a shoulder injury. He said it appeared to be a robbery that went bad.
No arrests had been made as of midday, more than two hours after the shooting.
Authorities did not say whether the two people who were shot were credit union customers or employees.
Bill McKee, spokesman for the sprawling Xerox complex, confirmed there was a shooting but provided no further details.
"There is a stepped-up state of security on campus," McKee said. "Employees have been moved to what we call safe zones within the campus."
Paul Moskal, a spokesman for the FBI in Buffalo, said initial reports were that the male shooter may have been wearing a "homemade FBI jacket."
Moskal said he believed no legitimate FBI employees were involved in the shootout, though the agency is one of several responding to the incident.
Police set up a number of roadblocks around the complex, said Debbie Licata, a records clerk for the Webster police. Police used dogs to search nearby woods.
The 1,000-acre Xerox campus 12 miles east of Rochester, a center for engineering and manufacturing, employed 8,000 people as of 2001.

Just wanted to make sure everyone gets the author's message that this was a sprawling Xerox complex.

WOW! My old home town!!!!
And as far as sprawling, it really is. No security gates or fences AT ALL, either. Bet that changes ASAP.

Nearly took a job at this a sprawling Xerox complex. The idea of working in the black monolith downtown was enticing, but Webster has little to recommend it.

Where I used to work!!!!Hey, I remember you! Aren't you were the guy who got fired for sitting bare-assed on the Xerox machines and sending the copies out to people as Smiley-faced Clinton greeting cards?

Webster has little to recommend it.Untrue! Nice cozy town, right next to a major manufacturing plant. I could walk to work, yet outside my front window was a lush forest. Close enough to Rochester to get there for anything you needed, but far enough that you had the small town atmosphere.
I really REALLY miss Webster.
