Bush Picks Utah Governor to Become Head of EPA (Gov. Leavitt of Utah to head EPA)

President Bush has picked Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, an advocate of shifting environmental regulation to the states, to become head of the Environmental Protection Agency, a senior administration official said Monday.

Leavitt, a three-term Republican governor, would succeed Christie Whitman, a former New Jersey governor who held the post of EPA administrator for the first two and a half years of the administration before resigning in May.

I think Sen. Hellewell would be a great choice for governor. He's a down-to-earth guy and has a good heart. He truly wants to help the "little" guy.

He anounced he was running last March and is the most conservative person running. He is very constitutionally minded and stands for all the things that I believe in--parental choice in education, advocates states' rights, protection of property rights, privitizing government functions where possible, etc.

I guess we can expect that the media will ignore him like they do to all the good conservatives. They've already chosen their favorites--Scott Matheson, Jr. and Jon Huntsman, Jr.--that they will tell us we should elect.

Mike Leavitt's open arms support for illegal aliens and benefits for them is nauseating, and was always an obvious favor that he and Chris Cannon (Jabba the Mutt) were doing for Bush. He and his brother are nothing more than self promoters who have gone against the interests of Utah whenever it appeared to benefit themselves.

Since lil' bro got dis-elected from his job last year, it seems like big bro was going to have problems soon. And Chris Cannon better hope there's a D.C. job waiting for him when Matt Throckmorton dumps him next year.

He must have been there when Clinton closed Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to coal mining for fraudulent environmental reasons in order to support his buddy ChiCom agent Riady's coal operations.

Just so we can get to know this governor better, what did he say or do at the time?

I assume there has been no follow-up on Grand Staircase-Escalante, has there? (see previous post)

Connect the dots time. Regarding the trillion dollars of coal in Escalante:

1998: "It would be terrible if the country with the most coal reserves on earth walked its way into a situation where we had to go around the world and protect our resources of coal. It borders on being immoral," said Gen. Richard Lawson, U.S. Air Force (Ret.). The potential is now even greater that the U.S. might need to send troops to foreign countries to protect coal and oil, he added.

Wasn't Leavitt Governor of UTAH when Slick Willie confiscated the Grand Staircase Escalante tract for the feds precisely when the state had OK'd the mining there of the second largest cache of low-sulphur coal in the world?

As I recall, Bubba went to ARIZONA to make the announcement, and the action increased the value of the largest low-sulphur deposit in the world, in Indonesia. Owner? The Lippo Group, headed by James Riady.

I ask you is it possible Leavitt has already lobbied Bush to reverse this egregious giveaway on the part of our treasonous ex-president?

Hmm, interesting, I didn't see your post before making my comment. Does this mean that Grand Staircase has been opened up for mining?

"compromised" as he does nothing about it it in the name of the environement to satisfy the political leanings of the GOP as they seek dem votes."

I always believed that Grand Staircase would one day be the way to put Clinton in jail. The quid-pro-quo was so obvious, coinciding as it did with Lippo sourced contributions. I have been hoping that SOMEONE would be pissed off enough to pursue the matter, and that maybe Leavitt would be that person. One way or another I'm sure that he and Bush have already decided what they will and won't do.

Read the links. The answer is NO. Once Congress and Clinton signed the legislation, nothing changed the status of Escalante from what I have read. Leavitt made his deal with the devil May 8, 1998, and left himself compromised ever since.

As I remember: Announcing the Escalante Grand Starcase monument, Bill Clinton showed disrespect to Utahns, including Utah leaders (even in the lateness of informing them, not to mention consultation process) and made the announcement in Arizona (Grand Canyon) instead of Utah. Gov. Leavitt was not invited, but Gov. Matheson's widow did attend. The monument status put the stops to the planned development of the coal deposits. It caused quite a stir here to say the least.
