Schwarzenegger opposed (ILLEGAL) immigrant services

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger voted for a 1994 ballot measure to deny social services to illegal immigrants, his campaign said Sunday — offering the first glimpse of the actor's stand on a major policy issue.

The Republican has promoted himself as the candidate in California's gubernatorial recall who can best appeal to the state's politically and ethnically diverse electorate.

But Democrats were quick to jump on the disclosure as a chink in the action hero's armor.

The GOP-backed Proposition 187 to deny health care and public education to illegal immigrants was passed by a wide margin, although it was eventually ruled unconstitutional. It remains a contentious issue and a litmus test for some voters, particularly Hispanics, to gauge whether a candidate is immigrant-friendly.

Schwarzenegger campaign manager George Gorton said the Austrian-born actor's vote for the measure would not prevent him from reaching out to all voters.

"He has a lot of empathy for people who have come here for a better way of living, whether they have gotten here legally or illegally," Gorton said. "But he definitely feels that people should get here legally."

Gorton said Hispanics were among the strongest supporters of Proposition 49, a ballot measure Schwarzenegger successfully campaigned for last year aimed at dedicating as much as $550 million annually to before- and after-school programs.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party, slammed Schwarzenegger for his decision to appoint former Gov. Pete Wilson, the architect of Proposition 187, as chairman of his new campaign.

"There's a famous phrase in our community, and that is, judge a person by the friends that he keeps," Torres said. "And unfortunately, his new chairman, Governor Wilson, supported 187 furiously against immigrants and Latinos."

The issue was one of the first Schwarzenegger's campaign has publicly addressed, discussing the vote in response to a reporter's inquiry.

Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, who is trying to survive the recall, and Schwarzenegger's Republican rivals have criticized him for speaking mostly in generalities since announcing his candidacy Wednesday.

Davis opposed Proposition 187.

THIS KIND OF STUFF HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AND RARELY REPORTED

Father And Son Arrested, Officers Hurt In Healdsburg Fracas

HEALDSBURG, CA - Healdsburg police today said a father and his 17-year-old son were arrested Wednesday night for assaulting officers who tried to break up a crowd of underage drinkers. Officials said the crowd grew to 25-30 people after Sgt. Kevin Young pepper-sprayed the 17-year-old who allegedly tried to leave the scene with alcohol. An emergency request for mutual aid was broadcast when the crowd became loud and hostile, police said. A total of at least a dozen Healdsburg Police Department and California Highway Patrol officers, and Sonoma County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to the 10:28 p.m. fracas at 52 Ward St. According to Sgt. Tony Pinochi, the officers were training in the area with K-9 units and they also responded to the scene with about five dogs. The youth's father, Alfredo Cervantes Garcia, 38, of Healdsburg, was arrested for battery on an officer and for resisting arrest. He allegedly punched Young in the head. He later posted bail and was released from the Healdsburg jail, Pinochi said. The 17-year-old was struck in the abdomen with a baton by an officer and was treated at Sutter Hospital in Santa Rosa. He was then taken to Juvenile Hall for assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, battery on an officer, resisting arrest and possession of alcohol. A Healdsburg police car was vandalized and a sheriff's deputy was struck with a stick during the altercation, police said. The two officers received cuts and scrapes. the liberal Aunold is in NY and is about to speak. You think he would want to be in CA speaking if this were a serious campaign
Look, if you're going to bash Arnold, do it on the issues. Besides, wasn't McClintock on the Sunday policy shows in D.C.? I don't think an occasional trip out of state is all that bad.

When you trip all over yourself to bash the guy like you just did here, you get your face all scraped up. Here, have some Bactine.

Wow, so did 60% of California!

Aunold? We don't have time to train a governor. Aunold has no credentials, no experience and is ceratinly not qualified to run CA. Serious Republicans have a serious candidate for governor of CA. And that candidate is Tom McClintock. He is the only candidate who has a proposal to balance the budget and do so without raising taxes and/or fees. If you go to http://www.krla870.com you can listen to a re-broadcast of Tom McClintock's intervisw this am. It was an excellent interview where Mac laid out his proposals to balance the budget, rescind the 42 billion dollar electrical contracts and reverse the triple car tax. And do that before lunch! Aunold would still be working out! The interview was at 7:45am

Fox News Alert: David Asman is speaking with Claudia Cowan as the camera shows Schwarzenegger at this NY event.

Claudia characterized Schwarzenegger as supporting the "anti-immigrant" measure, and then repeated that it would have denied services to "immigrants", although, she said, Arnold is an immigrant.

David Asman then pointed out it was anti ILLEGAL immigrant services, then he said "though it was perceived as anti-immigrant".

Uh huh, but you should stick to the issues and not mislead people by posting something you obviously know nothing about.

"Look?" Get your facts right before you jump into a debate with me! Mac was in CA yesterday on "This Week" and if you had bothered to watch the interview you would know that the interview was by remote! AUNOLD IS A LIBERAL SOCIALIST! Just like his old man and his wife! He wants programs for everyone! Is that issued oriented enough for you. I can't go into his policies any further because NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HIS POLICIES ARE! Hellooooooo

You're missing the point: It doesn't matter whether Arnold or Tom was out of state for a day or two. You say that my "facts" are wrong, but you're the one calling Arnold a "socialist," which is about as factual as the moon being made of your Bactine-needing face.

Calm down, now. You're going to make people think that McClintock supporters are rabid.

You still need that Bactine.

Anyone who is proposing programs for children and the elderly which are paid for by me is a socialist. Children already have an after school program, it's call HOMEWORK! And if you had watched "60 Minutes" last night you would know that there already exists programs for the elderly! It's called a JOB! "Calm down?" You may have the luxury of calming down but those of us who still live, work and pay taxes in CA don't have the luxury of "calming down". We are paying the highest taxes and fees in the country and are in debt as far as the eye can see. This state is on the brink of bankruptcy and we certainly don't have time to train an actor on how to be a governor much less one who has his pet liberal programs to fund! VOTE 4 MCCLINTOCK! http://www.tommcclintock.com

Well what was his appearance in NY but a publicity stunt to promote his liberal programs...certainly doesn't solve any problems we have in CA now does it. While Aunold is in NY, you NY'ers can keep him...he'll fit right in with the liberal RINO mayor you have in NYC! And look at what a grand job he is doing! ROFLMAO

Just goes to show how out of touch the Dems are to think that pointing it out will turn people against him. Personally, it gives me a reason to vote for him.

Know what gets me?

1) This thread is headed up by an article indicating Schwarzenegger's conservative position on Prop. 187.

2) So very, very eager are you to attack Schwarzenegger and plug McClintock (whom I like, BTW -- although some of his supporters are grating) that you post a post having zilch to do with the Prop. 187 issue discussed in the article. Apparently you have a canned, "SCREW ARNOLD! YAY TOM!" post all ready to go and saved on your desktop for pasting, even if the thread has nothing to do with it.

3) Then, when challenged, you hilariously claim -- in a thread that, to repeat, begins with an article discussing Arnold's position on an issue -- that Arnold hasn't taken any positions on any issues. I'm still suppressing giggles. Also, if he hasn't taken positions, how can you say he's a socialist?

Bottom line is, we agree that McClintock is a great guy and would make a fine governor. The difference is that I am keeping an eye on Democrat prevention, even if that means a big compromise ideologically. I'm not a "cult of victory" member and may well end up supporting McClintock over Arnold, but I won't sit still for gratuitous attacks on either man -- especially by supporters of one against the other. And that's just what you did in your first post.

It may interest you to know that Tom McClintock has disavowed supporters like you. On AM 640 (KFI in LA), either Thurs. or Friday evening, a caller came on praising Tom (who was the guest on the program), then bashing Arnold as a "Trojan horse" of the left, a socialist, "no better than Davis or Bustamante," etc. McClintock stopped the caller cold. He said he thought he (Tom) was the best man for the job, but that he had been hearing both Arnold's and his own supporters bashing each other, and that it had to stop, that clearly both men were wayyy better than Davis or Bustamante. It's just this kind of "socialist! socialist" hyperventilating that he was responding to.

On that note: I apologize for the Bactine comments, although I do think that your efforts do "trip you up" and make you look bad.

Not looking for a cigar, NY'er.Tell me! Did Aunold reveal how he would solve any problems we have in CA today? I didn't think so. Aunold should stay in NY since you like him so much. He makes Bloomberg look like a Phi Beta Kappa! LOL
