CAIRO, Aug 11 (KUNA) -- The security situation in Iraq is disturbing and the fallen regime is to blame, UN Special Representative for Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello stressed Monday.

In an interview with "Al-Ahram" daily published today, De Mello said the Governing Council in Iraq is doing a very good job and had proved it is above the criticism and doubt some Arabs showed. He added the council is carrying out its duties, taking decisions and proving itself capable of giving Iraqis the right and ability to choose their destiny and govern themselves.

De Mello said the security situation, however, is still very serious since crime rate in on the rise with the lack of a body to take on the duties of the Iraqi Police Force and maintain law and order. He expected this mission would take more than a few weeks.

He told the paper it should not be forgotten that Saddam Hussein had set all criminals free keeping only political prisoners behind bars. With these convicts and mobsters on the street, the ensuing chaos was no surprise.

De Mello condemned the "terrorist attack" on the Jordanian Embassy in Baghdad and expressed hope the incident would not be repeated. The Iraqi people have lived in fear for too long and do not need new forms of terrorism, he noted.

He pointed out the United Nations would play a key role in assisting the Iraqi people adding this role can take many forms, including political support. UN Special Representative for Iraq stressed the UN would initially help with the election process and has a team that would assist in this field to help Iraqis launch their march to democracy as soon as possible. Good news, he doesn't blame the U.S. Bad news, he doesn't mention the U.S., Britain and the coalition forces nor give them the credit they deserve.

"...The Iraqi people have lived in fear for too long and do not need new forms of terrorism..." Since when has the UN done anything more than talk about how the Iraquis were terrorized by their own government?

Yes, plus he mentioned:

He told the paper it should not be forgotten that Saddam Hussein had set all criminals free keeping only political prisoners behind bars. With these convicts and mobsters on the street, the ensuing chaos was no surprise.

Which is seldom brought to light...

So true. These facts are never in the mainstream media. There's so much that's brought to light on FR, but that's basically preaching to the choir. Too bad we don't get the info to the people who need to be educated.
