RANCHI: Farmers fed up with harassment at the hands of left-wing insurgents killed nine Maoist guerrillas when rebels tried to storm a village in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, the police said Friday.
State police chief R.R. Prasad said after getting wind of an impeding attack by the Maoists residents of Longo village armed themselves and then shot dead nine rebels and left two other insurgents critically injured. Prasad said the militants slain in the village in East Singbhoum district were members of eastern Indias powerful Peoples War Group. Many villagers have armed themselves in Jharkhand, where Maoist guerrillas, claiming to fight on behalf of landless peasants, hold sway in 14 of the mineral-rich states 18 districts.
Any chance we can take these villagers to the next Democratic convention?
So much for union recruitment down on the farm.
It reminds me of what happened to the Dalton Gang when they tried to rob Coffeyville.
A dead bandit is a good bandit.
Doesn't say if the villagers are Hundu or Mohamedan. If Hindu, have they run up a little karma debt by this possible adharma?

It is Deja vu all over again in my home state in India - Just another day, some more "communist" naxalites killing innocent citizens to express their "dissent" to the Government - thousands of people have been killed due to this stupidity. Who says that it is the religious fundamentalists that kill?
The Godless are as into violence as the God-fearing are. I think it is fanatical adherence to a faith and obstinate refusal to accept that one might be wrong that leads to violence than any religion in itself. rediff.com: Blast in Andhra bus; 30 feared killed
Naxalites ( "...the pro-Peking/Maoist Naxalites, whose political tool of trade was the Molotov cocktail.") exploded a bomb in a bus in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday night. Unconfirmed reports said 30 people died in the blast.
"It is clearly established that the People's War is behind the blast," the Deputy Inspector General of Police of Warangal district, Gaurav Savang, told Aajtak news channel.
Update: Jack, I am actually from the state of AP in India. I agree that the naxalites used to enjoy a lot of support from the village people who were oppressed by their landlords mercilessly.
Unfortunately, things have changed now. The original ideals behind the movement have all but disappered now, and innocent people are now getting caught between this power struggle between the Government and the naxalites.
Naxalites are killing villagers, because they think they are police informers, and police harrass them because they think these people harboring the naxalites. It is a really sad situation out there.
