Arnold Schwarzenegger Would Get 25% of the Vote If Californians Voted Today

California voters would remove Governor Gray Davis from office and replace him with Arnold Schwarzenegger by a 19 percentage-point margin if the election were held today, according to a TIME/CNN Poll.

Schwarzenegger leads Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamanate, his closest competitor, by a 25%-to-15% margin. Trailing were State Sen. Tom McClintock (9%), former candidate for governor Bill Simon (7%) and (tied with 4%) Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, columnist Arianna Huffington, and former Major League Baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein beat Schwarzenegger to replace Davis, 22 percent to 20 percent, if she had been a candidate, according to to TIME/CNN survey.

But California voters are not convinced that the Austrian-born action hero is capable of governing the state: 45% think he is, but many (55%) think he isn't capable (39%) or are unsure (16%). Schwarzenegger is not perceived as falling into any ideological camp: more see him as "moderate" (40%) than either conservative (23%) or "liberal" (19%).

The TIME/CNN Poll, conducted Aug. 8, surveyed 508 registered California voters by telephone. The margin of error is +/- 4.3%.

How can you reconcile this view with the reality that a badly-bungled campaign by a lackluster Simon manage to come >this< close to ousting Gray Davis?

Davis got one million fewer votes than in the previous election but they didnt go to Davis. People refused to vote for either of the turkeys.

"He is an inspiration, fiscally sharp (Masters in Economics), and larger than life."

Schwarzenegger's own backgrounder on himself at his "Arnold4Gov" website, only mentions his BA in business from U of Wisconsin.

There is no mention of a masters degree, not in economics, business or anything else.

Maybe he's just modest. Ya think?

I am under no illusions as to the effect that individual members of this board have on the outcome of an election. That's not the point of this board. This board represents Conservatives in particular and Republicans in general who like to sound off on different issues. Have no fear in that regard.

Sorry, I can't get to California. I was there on vacation last month. However, I'm living in Florida, a Republican state that has a party that knows how to win.

When we go to the polls, we go out to win an election, not a moral victory.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

That's nice. So why is Arnold talking up nothing more than funding his social spending? There's no talk of cutting taxes (which would bring back business that's fleeing); no talk of addressing the electric contracts that guarantee ridiculously high energy prices (another thing that's causing business to flee); and no talk whatsoever of eliminating the horrific burden of state-sponsored eco-terrorism done in the name of "environmental impact assessments."

This is day one or day three of the campaign depending on how you score it. Give him time to discuss the issues. Anything beyond simple one liner is going to be lost in the current environment. Let things settle down and let him raise the issues on his own schedule.

Great point, Ipaqman....Simon already lost an anti-Davis showdown...time for him to help the party.

What's Peter Ueubby's status? Maybe the strongest candidate, and after 1 day he's created zero buzz.

......Please name a specific time in American history where a conservative victory was achieved through incrementalism?.....

The conservatives are too stubborn and splintered to gain through incrementalism, they need to learn from the democrats/socialsits...would we have a garbage law like this in California if a Republican was Governor or there were more Republicans in the State Legislature? Some people learn from history others are doomed to repeat it...

Good for Arnold, he's managed to knock Kobe off the screen for a few.
But I still have a haunting mental image of a Celebrity Death Match with clay caricatures portraying Arnold, Gary Coleman, Larry Flynt, Arianna Huffington and that porn star engaging in one hell of a free-for-all.

Schwartzenegger's Prop 49 was funded without raising taxes, and was supported by Congressman Chris Cox.

Amendments to the budget can fund or defund certain items. "So, as Governor of California, Arnold will have complete control over abortion in this country? LOL. Frankly I dont see him having any control over abortion. Besides, I heard today that he is AGAINST partial birth abortion which is about all that is in play until the Supreme Court returns the decision back to the states."
___________________________________________________________

From the California Catholic Conference's legislative alert...

California's Medi-Cal program pays for more than 110,000 abortions a year at a cost of $34.5 million. (See the California Pro-Life Committee website). In California, a pregnant woman can obtain three or more abortions in the same year-all paid for by Medi-Cal with state dollars. This not only presents serious health risks to the woman but sends the message that it's acceptable to use abortion as birth control. Defunding Medi-Cal for multiple abortions is a natural place to save taxpayer dollars.
The governor can veto such legislation. He can also cut the funding of the state agencies administering such programs. Abortion is not at all "out of play" in California, since there are more aspects than just its legality.

Yeah that's just dandy lets have more unwanted babies to be raised by the state, and paid for by taxpayers to grow up to be liberals...

"Schwartzenegger's Prop 49 was funded without raising taxes..."

As you know, things cost money. When (and if) prop 49 kicks in, it will cost as much as $550 milion per year pulled from the state's general fund. Don't buy into the hype. It's the taxpayers who will be paying up to half a billion dollars a year to support Arnold's nanny service.

Against strict gun controls. He is for the assault weapons ban.

He is against partial birth abortion. I am not an idiot; I am aware that he is for abortion in other cases. Face it, a true pro-life person won't win. All I am saying is that Arnold is not the devil like you McClintock people are trying to make him out to be.

This information was posted in a thread earlier today.

Clearly, you would prefer to kill those babies before they even have a chance to be born. I wouldn't. Their innocent lives are precious to me and I won't put a price on them. I'm sorry you feel otherwise.

That said, the issue I was addressing was the relevance of abortion as a live issue in California, specifically, the taxpayer funding of same.

I guess I'm a little lost on this issue, and would appreciate some clarification.

Based on actual spending (as in it takes many billions to run a state), I'm a bit confused at the problem with this amount to keep kids off the streets, hopefully doing wholesome activities, as opposed to being in gangs and doing drugs (I'm sure it doesn't fix everybody, but it sure seems like a worthwhile attempt).

Although I'm in Utah for the past 10 years, I lived most of my life in California, and most of my immediate relatives live there now.

Prop 49 is funded only at a certain point when the general revenue exceeds its current numbers. It is designed so that it does not require raising taxes. I did not say it was not funded with taxpayer money...simply that it did not cause a raise in taxes.

Would you care to address why Chris Cox supported it? Do you consider him a RINO?

Just saw the poll results on CNN regarding qiestion #1.

54% would recall Gray Davis, while 35% would retain him as governor. A 19% margin in favor of the recall. I guess 11% are undecided.
