Arnold Schwarzenegger Would Get 25% of the Vote If Californians Voted Today

California voters would remove Governor Gray Davis from office and replace him with Arnold Schwarzenegger by a 19 percentage-point margin if the election were held today, according to a TIME/CNN Poll.

Schwarzenegger leads Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamanate, his closest competitor, by a 25%-to-15% margin. Trailing were State Sen. Tom McClintock (9%), former candidate for governor Bill Simon (7%) and (tied with 4%) Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, columnist Arianna Huffington, and former Major League Baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein beat Schwarzenegger to replace Davis, 22 percent to 20 percent, if she had been a candidate, according to to TIME/CNN survey.

But California voters are not convinced that the Austrian-born action hero is capable of governing the state: 45% think he is, but many (55%) think he isn't capable (39%) or are unsure (16%). Schwarzenegger is not perceived as falling into any ideological camp: more see him as "moderate" (40%) than either conservative (23%) or "liberal" (19%).

The TIME/CNN Poll, conducted Aug. 8, surveyed 508 registered California voters by telephone. The margin of error is +/- 4.3%.

Do you have the actually web address? Arnold.com appears to be a consulting agency in Ohio.

We are pretty sure that McClintock can't win as it stands now even though we favor him.

How can you reconcile this view with the reality that a badly-bungled campaign by a lackluster Simon manage to come >this< close to ousting Gray Davis?

If the Republicans in California would simply get over their starstruck apoplexy and focus on a candidate that supports genuine conservative principles and values, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I hate the word "moderate" --- we are not moderates, we're pragmatists: RWR Republicans!

"McClintock seems like a good guy. Hell, he's named after a John Wayne movie. But he hasn't got a prayer in Wackafornia. Vote Arnold. If things go to crap, we can say he's just a RINO. If he remains popular, he can campaign with Bush in '04 and make the Dems spend money on their own turf. "

Well said, Callahan. I like the cut of your jib.

That's nice. How about the poll results on Question #1? Anybody got the details of that, because this poll is useless if Davis is not recalled.

So all you'd need in this recall is for Gray Davis to switch parties and get an (R) by his name?

Exactly!

Nonsense poll for three reasons:

1) CNN/Time. Nuff said.
2) Registered voters -- not likely voters.
3) Friday night summer poll in California where the only thing Davis has not ruined is the beautiful weather.

He's at 9, Simon is at 7, Arnold is at 25. My take from that is that its Arnold who has the best chance to knock out Bustamante at this point. Simon needs to get out of the race. McClintock should stick around for a while in case Arnold fades or flips out. But whoever is low man 2 weeks before ought to get out.

Thats pretty much how I reconcile it.

So what's wrong with them making a deal, support in exchange for appointments to state leadership posts ?

And doesn't one have a much greater chance of influencing the policies of a fellow party member than changing the minds of the entire apparatus of another party?

I'm sure some of the critics here have never worked a job that less than perfectly met their expectations ,never eaten a meal that was less than perfect, etc.

The more I think about it, I wonder how many people will go straight to Question #2 while not even addressing Question #1.

Why bother having a recall to install a Davis clone?

Why not just admit that you don't have a clue what you're talking about? You think that Davis is a fiscal Conservative like Arnold? Here's a tip - read Free to Choose and then come back after you realize that Davis doesn't follow those principles.
