It strikes me that the EU wants to develop Anatolia as an underdeveloped region, a market for finished manufactured goods and as a source of cheap labor and raw materials. Tjere will be no real investment in research and development, with no real economic or technical progress. Such a situation would naturally result from the gutting of Kemalism, which would be the natural result of any union with the EU. The Turkish Republic would cease to be a reality, and only exist in the virtual reality of political rhetoric.
This is why I constantly argue against any Turkish union with Europe. Turkey can withstand hardship, but she cannot withstand the destruction of her fundamental ideology. From the perspective of this student of politics, Turkey is far better served in the long run by very long term financial investment, Kemalist ideological proselyzation, and intelligence gathering in the Turkic language regions of Central Asia.
