[history]
With one day left for candidates to qualify for the Oct. 7 recall election, former Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said Friday he would run, while actor Arnold Schwarzenegger picked up the help of former Gov. Pete Wilson and a nod from President Bush.

You can't be a fiscal conservative and fund social programs. If you cut taxes, there is less money to pay for social engineering. That's why I don't think he'll do much harm regarding social programs. He is quite concerned about California's economy.

He is quite concerned about California's economy I am sure Davis and Bustamante are quite "concerned" too. Maybe the "problem" is the "underinvestment" in the public sector, because the "rich" in California are "undertaxed." There are so many "solutions" to so many problems.

This is true, but if you look at what he said on Leno (and that is all we have to go on right now): "We want to make sure that the children are not left with without any books. We want to make sure that our children have the books, that they have their place in the classroom. We want to make sure hay they have after school programs. We want to make sure the mothers have affordable day care. We want to make sure the older folks have their care that they need. That everything has to be provided for the people."
These all involve spending money.
At this point I'm not impressed with Arnold, but I will wait and see what sort of platform he puts forward.

I don't know what Arnie's platform is yet, so I can't say for certain what his plans are.
We sure don't need any more NEW programs, and most of the old stuff should get tossed in the trash.

They do. They're also pretty much "consensus" programs. I don't think government has any role beyond ensuring public education, maintaining support for public infrastructure, providing law enforcement and public health services. All the rest are extras. Its hard to justify them in tough times although I can see why those who work for government will fight for them tooth and nail usually for the most crassly self-interested reasons.

That's not how I look at it. Yes we're heavily overtaxed. If the government should provide us with the few things we need it has to stop wasting our money.

Hey, the deadline to file your paperwork is 5pm PST, maybe you should give it a try.
By the way, just checked the polls right now:
Arnold 25%
Bustamente 15%
McClintock 9%

I take it you don't think the public sector is "underfunded" in California. This one may shock you: neither do I! Not at the moment anyway. Pity you don't fathom my style of posting.

If I had a couple of extra million in the bank, and didn't have this trial coming up, I might be tempted. On the other hand, McClintock is more qualified than I am, on the issues that matter at the moment. So perhaps not.

I believe the government has plenty of money. It wastes it! No wonder we have a $40 billion deficit. That's a lot of money and it could fund all the basic things government should do with enough left over to be returned to the taxpayers but the socialists here in our state have other ideas. They want to waste still more money. No thanks.

It really is sad to see how enfeebled and lazy the public has become. There are (non-government) ways to help with these kind of programs so that people who need help, or child care can get it. But the public has been swallowing this nanny state crap for so long, no one bothers to help themselves or their neighbors 'cause Uncle Sam Sugar, will come in and make it all better.

I'd love someone more "qualified" and more "conservative" than Arnold to win, but I'm realistic, and I don't think McClintock has a chance. Sorry, but that's my honest opinion.
To: AAABEST
Arnold was a millionaire from real estate before his first acting job. Just an FYI.

You maybe right, but look at it this way:
We just had an unprecedented grassroots recall of (and this is no easy title to toss out) one of the worst politicians of all times. The establishment GOP didn't want to get behind this, but it happened anyway. I think we have an obligation here to chose carefully who the next governor is, and not just the easy way out.
Like I said earlier, Arnold has the advantages. We fought to recall Davis, we should fight to get the best candidate. Especially since the liberals will be dividing their votes among the other (cough, cough) candidates.

The upside is that we can watch and wait to see who is in the hunt by election day. There is no need to rush to judgment. None.
